Moar pictars:

It's a '91 318iS (two less cylinders than Ian's but 20 more horses Laughing). The M42 has a weird issue on hot-restart but seems to run fine after that and readily pulls to the redline.

Near as I can tell it's been owned by yuppies and the parents of young women all it's life so there is a fair bit of deferred maintenance, and both front corners have been smacked. Rolling Eyes

I ordered all the usual M42 suspects (timing chain tensioner, lower oil pan gasket) as well as the usual tune-up parts and new clutch hydraulics (squishy pedal). Hopefully all that will be here by next weekend and I can tear into this thing.

Pfft. You mean it's RATED at 20 more hp. Laughing Looks good! Some of the standard ellipsoid headlights will drastically improve night time vision.

Of all people, I though you would steer clear of owning a German vehicle, lol.

The car didn't change him. He's changed the car. That's what you call, The Mountain Bimmer. By the end of the month he'll have glued a Banks Power emblem to it and tried to tow with it while having the trunk full of fire wood.

I'll donate the Banks stickers if you promise to put them on. I have several from my last truck.

You oughta know better than that, Jon. I don't even have a Banks logo on my truck with a Banks kit installed on it! Laughing

In other news, it's time for Das Maintenanze:

You can see the smack on the front corner. I got a junkyard fender with the car but honestly I don't really care too much. Laughing BTW, Ian, if you want to bring by some steel and beer and your welder sometime we can copy that skidplate for your car.

The M42 engine has an odd oil pan/oil pump design. The pickup is built into the upper pan in such a way that if the upper pan gasket fails the pump will suck air. This is compounded by the front pan bolts being inside the lower pan and BMW not using any locking compound on them. I have read some stories of people finding bolts in the bottom of the pan. All but one of mine were finger tight, so it's a definite problem. You can see I have one out in this picture. All got blue Loctite and a were retorqued.

Some people's children. (A nice German-made Mahle was installed in it's place.)

Anybody fancy themselves a plug reading guru? Looks like a slight lean condition to me.

I also replaced the notorious timing chain tensioner. The one I pulled out was the old (M42) style, not the improved M44 version, so it's been in there awhile. It had chain rattle for a short while on cold start before which seems to be gone now. Tomorrow we will see if it passes emissions. Rolling Eyes

Ooo, fancy raceskidz skidplate. Those are pricey. You could make a duplicate and sell that one for 150 or so me thinks. And yeah, I'll have to get down there some time and mimic it.

Ian, what did you do about the crap E30 shifter linkage? I routinely miss second going both up and down. Pelican sells a kit for like a hundred bucks which seems like a bit considering it doesn't have any hardparts in it.

Also, this seems like a thing:

This car is already turning into a baaad rabbit hole, dudes. Surprised

That's part of the problem of having a "fun" car as your DD. I have the same problem with my Subaru. I, however, have decided that I can't possibly get by without having a"fun" car as my DD so I just call those random upgrades incidental costs and get over it... Laughing
