My 69 is very fast... tho I have no idea how fast...

and a big part of it has to be the rear end... which I would guess is in the 4.56 range... 12 bolt.

At 5 MPG, trips are few and far between. So... I'm thinking about swapping that out for a 2.73.

I know about as much about setting up a rear end as I do brain surgery.

Anyone in this neck of the woods able to do this?

What would it run me to have this done? Any recommendations?

probably 200 bucks to have it done if you provide the parts...

www.randysringandpinion.com would be your best bet IMO for parts

You're lookin at $150+ for the ring/pinion
And another $100+ for a rebuild kit.
You'll want axle bearings/seals because you're already there.
$5 for gear oil, another like $7 for Limited Slip Lube (if you have a posi, and get it from GM dealer).

If you do it yourself.

Try calling I5 Driveline, great bunch of guys. Probably run you around $500 to have them do it.

2.73?? why not a 3.73? i have a 3.73 and the mileage is about as good as it would get with any lesser. from what i have gathered its when you get into the 4.x that kills the mileage more than anything.

think of the power he is pushing through a tranmission without an overdrive.
not to mention, its a bigblock engine.

you more than likely have an overdrive.
3.73 from 3.23 isn't going to be that drastic for you.

if he's going from 4.xx or 3.xx to a 2.xx ... I think he'll be better off.

short of getting a gear vendors (which has crossed his mind i'm sure), cheapest way to do it is a new gear ratio

I don't have an overdrive. And it was that drastic for me. I was just showing ET that small changes can make a large difference. I'm also putting out decent power.

Oh, yeah... I've checked out gear vendors and, at some point may go that route... but it's a $2500 or so route to go.

I-5 driveline over at Lou's Machine Shop, right?

Right. It's not Lou's anymore, he sold it to the head machinist Jim.. it's now called C's Machine.

Really? What'd Lou wind up doing? Did he finally retire?

I was seeing Lou over at the driveline and the repair shop. He's still out there!
