So, the question, is internal or external balance.

I lean towards internal, but I'd like to hear the pros/cons of both.

Internal. I don't know why you would want to deal with an external balance, if you are building the motor. IIRC you can also run a lot smaller balancer with an internal, so that is rotating mass savings.

If you go internal you can even use your current balancer and flywheel. Otherwise you'll be buying both.

If you run an external balance and have to change flywheels/balancers for some reason, you'll never get it balanced as well without having the full rotating assembly out.

lol, well since my inner/outer hubs came apart on the balancer, I'll be needing a new one...Time to get an SFI approved piece!

Cool.

Consensus seems to be internal balance.

Guess I'll start pricing bottom end assemblies.

Thought you didn't care about SFI?

My goal with the car is mostly Street/strip. Handling is nice, but that'll will have to come later on.

power goal is 370hp to the ground. I'd like to be able to spin it up to 6k consistantly and know it's going to be fine. Nitros is a very good possibility, so i"m torn between a possibly a cast crank, cast rods, and Hypertecutic pistons or an all forged bottom end.
Although the forged stuff sounds nice..., if I go all forged I"m already $1500 into it, and I'm trying to keep this build, when all's said and done around $3000.

Here's a little shopping list I've compiled so far:

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=ESP%2D13054L030&autoview=sku

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=SCA%2D1%2D91305BIE&autoview=sku

when I moved my harddrive over to my new computer, I think I lost my DCR calculator, so I haven't had a chance to compute where each would put me.

If nitrous/forced induction is in your future, spend the couple hundred dollars extra and get at least forged pistons. It looks like both kits come with forged I-beams, so you should be ok there, as long as you don't go crazy with the revs. I would talk to Brandon about crank material though, I don't know how a cast crank will hold up. The longer stroke has a lot more leverage on the crank than the smaller stroke does. Considering the cost of having to build this a 2nd time, I think I would want to do the forged setup now, but if money is an issue, it may not be an option.

If I can get what I want for my 2001 camaro, I'll have a little bit of money to spare, so I'd go with the forged bottom end. However, I have to be able to afford building the 383, and have money left over for daily transportation too.

I would agree too John, Build it once--build it right.
