Guys, all headers that aren't coated have a notice that says "paint is for shipping."

They will rust. Best bet is to just get coated ones. The ones I have forsale I sandblasted and coated in the barn some 5 years ago. They are only now just showing some minor spots of rust, but still look good.

Even the good VHT header paint will rust within 10 years.

That do it yourself coatings still holding up?? Awesome!

As Paul said that paint they come in is shipping paint. If you dont want them to have surface rust they need to be coated, or you need to strip the paint and coat them when you get them.

Columbia Coatings has the coating Paul used, you spray it on with a touch up gun and then heat treat it. The VHT paint is good stuff but it wont last 10 years. I've had my headers that long and there are only patches of it left. It does last a long time for spray bomb paint though.

If you don't mind some surface rust that doesnt mean the headers are going to rust out. I've had uncoated hedmans on my truck now since 93 and they're still working. If you drive it every day they dont really even get that rusty. The heat keeps them fairly clean. If you drive once a week though they won't last near as long.

Maybe I was misunderstood, I'm completely aware that uncoated headers come with only packing paint on them. I was just addressing the quality difference between the metal in Derek's 2055's and my Edelbrocks since we installed them pretty close to the same time, about a year and a half ago. And to this day his still don't have a hint of surface rust and mine did within a week.

As far as coatings go, its best to get the uncoated ones then take them and get the ceramic coated on your own. My headers were ceramic coated, but from rock chips and such the Y-pipe is now quite rusty lol

The aftermarket coating are much better in quality. Mind you, the ceramic ones you buy are better then uncoated if you dont have a shop around or are trying to save a little $$

I have the same Edelbrock headers on my 89 and had them coated over in Auburn at Performance Coatings. Very little to no rust has shown up since. I don't have much of a Y-pipe and need to have one built, I'm going to have Stan's Headers (up the street from Performance Coatings) do that for me when I have the chance, might even finish the exhaust system there.

The bad thing about header wrap, is that if it's not a daily driver, it will rot the headers out faster because it will collect moisture and keep it wet from the condensation when you shut the rig down.
