Alrighty, so my swap meet dial indicator turned out pretty handy and explained the weak power at the dyno. I need some help interpreting the data. The angles were measured at the crank, hope that is okay.

exhaust
0.000 215 btdc
0.010 204 btdc
0.010 0 tdc
0.000 7 atdc

intake
0.000 17 btdc
0.010 7 atdc
0.010 213 atdc
0.000 219 atdc
and .208" lift at pushrod at int and exh.

What I figured was at .010:
exh duration, 204*
int duration 208*
no overlap

at .000
exh duration 222*
int duration 236*
24* overlap
with a heathly .332" lift at valve with stock 1.6:1 rockers.

Please comment. I've never dialed a cam before so I hope this all makes sense.

Oh ya, tiny... so I just might get a lot more power at the next dyno. Just might.

Are you sure stock rockers are 1.6? I thought they were 1.7.. but may just be confused with the 396 I had. Someone had tried to copy a 375hp (same as 425hp except no holley) on it.

Rockers are 1.64 by my measurements.

And my cam is tiny. 204/206 exh/int duration? 155 lobe separation? Muahaha, next dyno adventure will result in much more power. According to Wallace racing and my 0.000 measurements:

Quote:
Your cam has an Overlap of -10.00 degrees and has in Intake Duration of 382.00 degrees.
The Exhaust Duration is 222.00 degrees.
The Inlet Cam has an Installed Centerline of 208.00 degrees ATDC.
The exhaust cam has an Installed Centerline of 104.00 degrees BTDC.

Something tells me 300+ hp to the wheel might be possible with a cam swap....

I may not wait till next year to dyno... we will see when I get the cam. With a baby coming and the wife income gone for a bit I may need to hold off. But at least I can get a cam. Any opinions on solid versus hydraulic?

Research research research. I'm trolling though the chevelle stuff trying to find a setup similar.

Me being my regular friendly self landed me a free torker cam and lifter set from a guy at work. Anyone have an opinion of it? It's huge compared to my stock one. I think I'll try it just to see what happens. I need to put on my new timing chain cover anyway. They recommended the torker 2 intake but my rectangle port performer rpm air gap should be very comparable.

Thumbs down

I thought Edelcrock was still making 40 year old grinds. Cam tech has come a long way, might be leaving quite a bit of power on the table to save a couple hundred bucks.

Try 50 year old carbs.. I'm not sure exactly when the AFB come out.. but it was long before 71.

AFB came out in 1957. AVS in 1963/64.

I was under the impression that most of the edelbrock grinds were old take-off's from Crane stuff.

Yeah no.

Get something modern.

Solid if you want a little more and don't mind setting lash on a semi regular basis.

Damnit, spend the extra money and get offset EDM lifters.

Crower makes something similar for hydraulics now too. They have a lifter with a small machined flat on the side that oils the lobe as it spins. But I think solid's are in my future as well.

On the side?

That seems dumb.

EDM lifters have the hole on the bottom where it contacts the lobe itself. There is a center hole and an offset hole option. Harold said DO NOT get the center hole. Get the offset hole.

Can't put a hole in the bottom of a hydraulic for obvious reasons. Cam lobes run within about 0.030 of the lifter side, so squirting oil directly on the lobe that way will help alot. As you say though.. not like putting it right between the parts. My boss ordered a 454 for his boat from S&J .. it actually came with the crower type lifter. I'd say it looked like a quality piece.. but we actually had to replace one because it stuck down! LOL

I don't see why they couldn't put a port on the bottom. It's still a controlled oil leak either way. Just put it on the other side of the valve on the lifter.
