As many of you already know, the 305 in my 89 broke on the dyno rollers on Saturday. I think I found the cause of the problem, but too late to fix the aftermath. Apparently the sender wire for my fan switch had come loose, and the fan never came on while on the rollers. Engine got too hot, broke something in the bottom end by the sound it makes.
I came across this on craigslist this morning, but I'm open to other options as well. Price seems good, says there's a warranty, and I have the funds (barely) in savings.

| Make sure the block will fit a roller cam. Tbi trucks didnt always get rollers, and some arent even machined for the dog bones on top of the lifters. |

It should be machined for rollers even if the original aplication didn't have them. You can kinda make out the bosses for the spider (retainer) in the lifter valley in that first picture. You'll probably have to upgrade that cam for sure if its a mild RV cam, but ask him about the specs for sure. Is the motor new or a rebuild? It says .030 over, so I'm assuming its a rebuild. I'd maybe see if that price is negotiable. _________________ '86 Trans Am - 5.0L TPI - LT1 cam - 700R4 - WS6

| I have a 93 truck tbi 350 I picked up. It has the bosses for the spider, it is not machined at the lifters. So a stock type roller would not be possible. Changed alot of chevy tbi motors over the years.. the pickups came with either cam, and sometimes the blocks were machined sometimes they werent. |

That add appears to be from a business. I found another similar with the same contact info and stated "Other cam, intake, and cylinder head options available." Since I'm still off tomorrow, I'll have to call and/or make a trip over there to have a look.

That's a good price, especially with warranty. _________________

There's a guy on TGO that has one of the Summit crate motors up for sale. Though a flat tappet cam, I'm considering because of the price - $600 (intake to pan).
This motor

He's in PA, so shipping might be a problem, but I'm exploring that option. |

| Al, the phone # for that Craigslist shop comes back as Bowtie Performance in Sumner. I know Luke bought his crate motor from them a few months ago, try contacting him. |

Thanks Aaron, I'll check that out. I might just pay them a visit as I have nothing on my schedule tomorrow
After a little research, they've been around since 1988. BBB rates them A+ with zero complaints in the last 3 years. But I still want to research more |

from all the research i did he has the best prices around
and just fyi (i know you probably wanna go 350) but...there is a TPI 305 w/700r4 on CL for $1200, comes with wiring harness ECM engine tranny, intake everything...

Thanks, but too much wiring to change from TBI to TPI. I also have the EBL ECM for TBI which I can program without removing the ECM from where it's supposed to be. I'm also rolling a T5 manual, hopefully a change to T56 in the future. |

I thought all L05s were machined for rollers? _________________ '86 Trans Am - 5.0L TPI - LT1 cam - 700R4 - WS6

good point, well then i would try bowtie performance then, i called all around trying to find a motor with a good warranty that was closeby and decently priced and i bought my motor for $1500 and it came with everything, from oil pan, to valve covers, also included timing cover too, and all the gaskets, even intake gaskets, he put my motor together fast, and first time i turned the key it started up and ran good. havent had any problems with it so far, just rolled to 2900 miles haha
my motor is a roller 350, i dont remember if it came out of a vette or f-body but its one or the other he said it was an original tpi motor _________________

| I paid Bowtie Performance a visit today. Nice shop he has. We banged out a deal for a 383 with roller cam and Vortec heads. A bit more spendy than Luke's motor, but probably less than what I could put together myself for. Comes with oil pan, high flow oil pump, Scat crank & rods, Speed Pro pistons among others which will be on a data sheet when delivered. He also gave me the option to purchase a Vortec intake for TBI. |

Nice motor, Al! It sucks how it happened, but at least now you'll be better, faster and stronger than before. Just maybe a little bit ahead of schedule.
I look forward to the return of the red RS. _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

And I'm going to have to take it easy on it until I can replace the T5 behind it with something beefier
Shopping continues for intake (I'll probably get the one offered by Bowtie Performance), 454 TBI unit, fuel pump & regulator, 350 specific sensors. |

that would have been an awesome bit of info when i started my 350 search, never had time to tear up the block at the yards in the 100* az heat (or the patience) and found that out the hard way lol _________________ If you expect a kick to the balls and get a slap to the face its still a victory

In true crewbie form, go big or go home.
I agree with Gabe, sucks how it happened but it sounds like it'll be a marked improvement. _________________
