Time to get serious. I need to get my GTA roadworthy again. It has been sitting since last years dyno gathering with no 5th gear, and making some noise in other gears. In order to fix it I need to replace the transmission with another one. Currently the car has a WC-T5, behind a slightly freshened stock L98. (has put down 245HP 345TQ, on the dyno).
The T5 did not succumb to the "massive" power of my L98, it died a much clumsier death, developing a massive fluid leak that I failed to notice until it was too late. running with low fluid for too long causing it to wear prematurely.
the purpose of this post is to figure out the next step. my eventual plan is to go GEN III with this car, but that is realistically at least a year down the road, probably more. I also like the idea of six forward gears, but I am not married to it.
Mike had recommended a TKO in the past, citing several reasons: New, and thus not a mystery like a used T5; you can order custom gear ratios, so you won't need a six speed in order to have that balance of acceleration vs top end speed; and higher durability for higher power applications, so i won't have to worry about killing the T5's. the only hangup I have here, is that i plan on changing my setup, so then my gear ratios would not be right anymore... right? additionaly these things are like... 2 grand.
If I go T56 now, then i am all ready to go when I put in an LSx engine in the future, but they are almost as much money as a TKO, and then i still have the "is this thing going to blow up in three months" problem.
what do you guys think? i would like to spend less than 1500 on this if i could.
rebuild a T5 to be better?
T56?
used TKO? |

Tony,
I would say that to get it road worthy, reworking the T5 or just getting a different T5 is the quickest, easiest, cheapest.
If you are going to shell out money for a new trans I would say go T56. Will have everything you need now and going forward.
My .02.
Either way, get that girl back on the road!

Especially if finances are tight like everyone elses..... find another core. And build the two into one and get a $150 rebuild kit. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

t5 parts are cheap im rebuilding mine and its goin behind a nasty 383 dunno how long it will last but thats just what it is, also the t56 to fit a lsx is quite different then that of a LT1 style, so its not really preplanning for the future lsx swap, would be more of a p.i.t.a. _________________ Camaro Kid

And for what it's worth, just because you have a t56 doesn't mean it automatically work behind the genIII/IV. You will have to mod it. I say find any t5 to rebuild and run with that until you decide on final motor choice. _________________

Sounds like rebuilding the T5 is the way to go. thanks for the input. as far as dyno, it will make it now, i just can't drive fast. gears 1-4 are ok, just noisy. _________________ 86' firebird (Junked in 2015). 88' GTA (sold in 2020).

| Check the input shaft Tony, 1.125" diameter and 26 splines. The V6 version is like 1" diameter and 14 splines. I think that's right. |

thanks, it was installed in a 305 when i got there, helped him remove it. "it will take like, 45 minutes" he says. 3 hours later... but he threw in the hydrolics, pedals, and offered up the clutch, but i left that with him. got the bellhousing and stock shifter too.
the fluid looks brand new, the seals are nice and rubbery. i think it was actualy rebuilt recently as he said. but now what the hell am i to do with a camaro shift ball. _________________ 86' firebird (Junked in 2015). 88' GTA (sold in 2020).

It's been well documented in the past that for every Camaro part added to a Firebird the car as a whole increases in awsomeness 12.9%.
However, Firebird parts added to a Camaro increases the awsomeness to over 25%, more if there is a trailer involved to remove the Firebird carcass.
Take the shift ball and build a Camaro around it. |

The awesomeness increases because there never is much wear on firebird parts. _________________ Member of the "Elite T56 Club" , big brake club, and "burgundy" (not red or maroon) car owner.

That's why the 5th gens will never be as popular as previous F bodies, Pontiac didn't make us any parts cars. |

| transmission is in. you should see the fluid from my old one. it came out "milky", and with a fair amount of metal in it. i trove around real quick with the new one just now, it shifts from 1-4 well, i could not get going fast enough to use 5th, what with my engine running like crap and all. i'll address that later. |
