Alright, so like the title says i need to know what the signs of a cat gutting
itself are, i was doing some work on the car today at work and i noticed metal flakes in the exhaust tips, my thing is though i was grinding on the passenger side (went to vaccum out the car, pulled my sub box and found a pool of water in the well!!!!!) i pulled the weather stripping off the hatch and found that the metal lip the seal attaches to rusted out in one spot letting water in, so i used duraglass and made a filler for the gap, i had to grind that down though so i thought at first that it was just the metal off that, but when i picked up the flakes they had a shine to them, not like normal metal grindings it kinda looked like fish scales, and i found them on the driver side tip as well.

on a side note theres been this weird noise coming from under the car ive been hearing for a few days now and after today im wondering if my cat is collapsing, if it is im just gonna hollow the dang thing out for now, when i was putting the exhaust together i put triangle flanges on each side of the cat so i can pull it out and just put a pipe in its place, problem isi never got around to making the pipe lol

so does this sound like a cat gutting itself? id rather hollow it out than have some awesome underglow from the thing heating up if it is

never heard of a cat falling apart, only heard of them getting clogged, but what i did was i went to walts bought some pipe like 2 feet and i cut my cat off, used exhaust clamps to hold on the piece, then take it back to them and have it welded, they can weld a pipe, they just cant remove your cat, so if you do it yourself then its all good, thats when i had the v6 tho, my exhaust now has no cat its all one piece of pipe from collectors to muffler

Well its gotten banged up a bit lol it hangs down low and got punched a couple times in the snow lol even my factory exhaust would hang down like that so I dunno what's up, when I get my sfc's welded in by joey at LoCash ill figure out a better way to hang the exhaust lol I got my flanges and pipe from midas in az, had them weld on my flanges and such, my only issue is money is tight this month cuz I'm leaving for az so I'm takin a week off work, so for now ill just hollow the cat and get the pipe later on

The inside of a cat is porcilin(sp) or ceramic. It would be little white pellets.

I have seen a cat come apart and end up downstream. Had a piece of one stuck in the muffler of my little brother's car.

@ Jay: Ever punched one? They might start out white at the factory, but not after 25 years under a Chebbie. Laughing

Negative, I've never seen white pellets except in reaaaaally old cats, this one was a dynamax ( think that's the name, just woke up) high flow cat, I've seen them come out in chunks as mentioned above, never as white pellets, I'm on my way to the VA hosipital right now, ill pull the cat at work and take a look later

They come apart all the time. Whack the cat when your fist and listen for rattles. Run the engine and listen at the cat for rattles. Rev it up and see if chunks come out. Often times they get stuck in the exhaust pipe and or muffler.

The old chevy stuff was pellet based. The mid 80's up ones should be a honeycomb type.

It looked honeycomb. 2 I remember highly is an 85 s10, and 91 camaro.

Yuuup it was toast, it fell out when I pulled it out from under the car lol

Oon a side note does anyone have a welder? That would either want to weld 2 flanges onto a pipe orrrr fill one hole for the air tube on the cat? Prefferably the second one since money is tiiiight right now

Fold the AIR pipe over 180Deg. It will seal pretty well.

Tried that lol it snapped clean off it was cheap cast metal it snapped without hesitation

It probably won't cause you a problem. You might get some exhaust fumes if you turn of the AC and run on just your fresh air vents.

No no no... Exhaust leaks right under the car like that will smoke you out and party with your brain cells.

Yeah I'm starting to forget things more who knows lol just gotta toss in the straight pipe after everything levels out money wise, ill see if joey at lo cash can weld up the flanges when we do my sfc's, just gotta get a day off from work lol I took a big hit taking a week off to go to az lol

The guy I took my exhaust to didnt put a cat on.

and did it for really cheap. Soo if you need someone to take your car to for exhaust, thats the place to go.
