I'll bet you put the tires on upside down. Rotate them 180 degrees.

Is that possible?
Someone said it could be the busing to the torque arm. |

No, please don't go turn your tires. I was just messing with you.
Seriously though, I wouldn't drive it until you get the problem sorted out. Severe vibration causes parts to wear out or break FAST! |

When the TA bushing goes bad, you normally will hear a loud THUD from under the car, when you take off from the line, or hit the brakes. That doesn't sound like "hopping" as you described it.
A little more detail will help us all, let us know what it is actually doing. Is it hopping all the time? at a certain speed? when you leave the line? everytime you shift? Also, it is making an audable noise, or just vibration? things like that will help us, try to give you some valid ideas of what might be going on.
If you could also include, what you actually did work wise? What did you put back together in the rear end? Did you put the housing back in? rebuild? new posi unit? new gears? new brakes?

Just when you accelerate is when I felt it. Both off the line and from a roll.
All I did in the rear end was clean off the magnet and change the fluid. |

well in that case you don't need it, check your tires one could be separated but normally that would make it bounce all the time. |

As old as the car. I never replaced it. Doubt the guy before me did.
But the shifter doesn't come up or anything. |

*just my two cents (worth what you paid for it)*
You guys are over-thinking this. The kid messed something up while he was under there; jacked in the wrong place and bent something, didn't put enough diff oil in, put the wrong oil in, springs didn't get reseated, whatever.
Need to go back and retrace your steps. Replacing the diff oil isn't going to blow out a trans mount, or cause a problem with LCA's to suddenly appear. |

I guy who helped me swap a clutch once forgot to reattach the torque arm on my RS. As I drove slowly down the driveway, the car kinda hopped along. My money is on your torque arm not being attached properly. _________________ '86 Trans Am - 5.0L TPI - LT1 cam - 700R4 - WS6

I never lowered the car. But the previous owner could have. It looks lower than stock.
I had to replace the panhard bar because it was bent. Whats the bar that attaches above the panhard? if thats bent too could that make it do what its doing?
And I got the car for free. |

| So when I put the torque arm back on after the swap, does it need to be adjusted? |

No. Just make sure it is attached properly to the trans mount. _________________ '86 Trans Am - 5.0L TPI - LT1 cam - 700R4 - WS6
