				Last year I cruised down to Portland to hang with some crewbies and pick up some parts. On the way down I happen to get nailed passing a semi on the right. (No, I wasn't on the shoulder, I was just in the right lane to go around two semi trucks in the left two lanes.) Not sure why they were just cruising down I5 in the left and middle lanes going under the limit but whatever.

I had missed a court date here and there because of my address change and such. But I finally went in to court today to take care of everything. Showed proof of ins (didn't have it in the car at ticket-time) and that was dropped to court costs ($25). Judge asks me if I've seen the police report and I said no because I hadn't gotten around to filing for discovery. He says neither has he. The Officer forgot to file a report. I was confused, what happens now? He looks at me sternly and says, "You may go now, have a nice day." He had to dismiss the case for lack of evidence!

Back to a clean record... err...for now. _________________

It's always been illegal to pass on the right. It's just not enforced much. It's also illegal to travel in the left lane, except to pass, also not enforced much.

So who was in the wrong? Ian for passing on the right, or the truckers for impeding traffic? _________________ 92 Camaro

I also never heard of the law tell a few years ago on a truck forum. Seems this is a really big one held up in Cali. Which now makes me understand why traffic in Cali blows ass from what I here.

If it wasnt for passing in the right lanes because someone is in the fast lane doing under the speedlimit, it would add another 10min for my way into work. I "abuse" this law atleast 2-3 times a week MINIMUM!! _________________ 2008 GMC Z71

Technically it's a bit of a gray area. The RCW I was cited for was this;

 	  | Quote: | (1) The driver of a vehicle may overtake and pass upon the right of another vehicle only under the following conditions:

     (a) When the vehicle overtaken is making or about to make a left turn;

     (b) Upon a roadway with unobstructed pavement of sufficient width for two or more lines of vehicles moving lawfully in the direction being traveled by the overtaking vehicle.

     (2) The driver of a vehicle may overtake and pass another vehicle upon the right only under conditions permitting such movement in safety. Such movement shall not be made by driving off the roadway. |

To ME that says if there is pavement (not shoulder, actual lanes) and it's safe (ala not at 50mph faster than the car you're overtaking) then it's legal. I was going to use the "I didn't feel safe traveling behind a pair of tractor-trailers in case they hit something and knocked it into my lane or happen to have a blowout. So I moved to the right and overtook with caution." But I didn't even have to bust that out!

What irks me most about this is everyone does pass on the right. Which, admittedly is a bit hazardous at times. But we have to because there are so many left lane campers that won't move. Even when someone behind them (me) flashes lights or tap the horn to get their attention. From what I've seen it boils to a combo of a HUGE lack of attention to anything but themselves and ego. No one out there wants to let anyone by. This subject aggravates me to no end. |

A law was passed in Washington about 15 or 20 years ago that makes it illegal for a semi to travel in the left lane of I-5 at all. That guy should have been ticketed! _________________ '86 Trans Am - 5.0L TPI - LT1 cam - 700R4 - WS6

				Most of the time trucks will use the center lane when there is an exit only lane coming up. (Chehalis between exit 77 and 72) and when there are a bunch of on ramps, again between Seattle and Tacoma. The reason should be obvious, trucks need at least 100' to change lanes. 100' gives the 70' of the vehicle length, it cuts off the traffic behind with 15' and tailgates the traffic in front at 15'. 100 feet is the MINIMUM. 150 is much better. 150' is half a football field. in heavy traffic how often do you see 150' gap in traffic? If you are trying to merge do you like getting boxed in by a truck in the right lane? Answer to both is nope. Trust me on this, its better for a truck to use the center lane for the sake of merging traffic, and to minimize lane changes. Lane changes are the number two cause of accidents involving trucks, and the number one cause one public roads. Select the proper lane early and stay there. _________________ Killing mailboxes since 2009 |

I appreciate your comments on this Flea. You and Rod are our resident truckers, right? Wasn't there one other crewbie that drove truck? This seems obvious to me but I guess a lot of people either don't realize this or don't care if it doesn't directly affect them. When cars are merging or we're coming up to an onramp I try to pay attention to see if there are any vehicles merging to give room and smooth things up a bit.

Now that might explain why there was a truck in the center lane but the left lane? And for a few miles? Meh, I don't know their circumstances I just know I wanted to go around them. Less time I'm sitting next to a semi, the better.

Edit; not right lane...LEFT lane.

I think BigDaddyVu is a trucker as well.

Jim, is it legal for you guys to pass each other on the far left lane of a three-lane highway? I always see signs in urban areas for no gvw over 10,000 in the far left lanes. |

				I don't pass in the left lane when in a city area like that when there is least 3 lanes. I'll ride along at the same speed as everyone else. I always take the middle lane when I get into a city when there are a bunch of on ramps. Wanna see something crazy, get on I 80 westbound in Vacaville, CA. 4, 5, and 6 lanes with cars flying past on both sides at 75mph. By the time you make the 50 or so miles down to Oakland you don't even car if you run them over anymore.

They should throw out these freakin split speed limits for cars and trucks though, that is unsafe and makes it dangerous for a truck to be switching lanes in heavy traffic. Run through Vegas or Pheonix where the speed limit is the same for everybody and it is alot safer. They need to set the interstates to 75 for cars and trucks. Then I could make some time. |

				No Aaron, it is not legal for any vehicle that is towing another vehicle/trailer, or for any vehicle over 10,000 GVW to use the far left lane on a 3 lane controlled access road. Key is far left lane, on a four lane road a truck may use the three right lanes unless otherwise posted.

You want to see it done right, Zanesville, OH has the right idea. All trucks/through traffic are restricted to the LEFT two lanes in town. Idea being that the merging exiting traffic should not have to compete with Swift for space. If local traffic wants to use the left lane they can, but trucks should stay to the left and out of the way unless they need to exit. _________________ Killing mailboxes since 2009 |
