but it doesnt have a motor. Purchased a new 20ft car hauler
Trying to think of what all I NEED, and what all I would like to do with this later. I know some of you have trailers, would like some feedback of things you think would be nice, or had to install...
NEED
4 straps
1 toung lock for not in use
2 ramp locks
relocate plate bracket, being done at the lot for warranty reasons.
Already have hitch pin lock
LATER???
water seal floor to make last longer
side marker lights (Ive been hit in the side before because they couldnt see the trailer)
spare, and spare mount
winch??
"junk" box??
longer ramps if space provides
Anything else? _________________ 2008 GMC Z71

I'll get some tomm or wed. I just finished paper work, and showed them what I wanted done with the plate bracket.
Then the project car throws a tranny code on the way home |

| Macs sells good military grade straps. I bought a set and it was worth every penny. I opted for the axle savers which I highly recommend. There's really no place to clip the strap anyway without the axle savers. |

Tilt bed
Locking tool box on the front is a must, then you can store the extra battery, jumper cables, tie downs, come along etc in a secure place. |

Tilt bed is nice..
But some nice tiedowns on the bed. The u-shaped ones. Know what I'm talkin about?
And the winch would be an added plus. haha |

Qt, can I just google search mac straps?
What are axle savers?
for tie-downs now, it has hooks on the side that are used for building wood walls around it. Hopeing they work, if not I can always weld something on.
Not seeing to much space for a junk/tool box upfront after a winch.
From what I have heard, tilt beds suck on very low cars. Plus the price is WAY over my head. The one I got really is. Esp after the car threw a trans code on the way home. Just praying I wont have to have it rebuilt. |

| Just like going up a hill i suppose. haha. Might hit the front fasica, but going slow enough you wont do damage. saves the trouble of ramps too |

We have put Mike's GTA on a tilt-bed. I don't think my car would make it, but my car can hardly get in my own driveway. |

| My car (stock Z28 springs) was on a tilt bed, and it drug the nose but good. It was a wacky home-built trailer, though, which may have been a part of it. Both mine and John's Camaro's made it onto the ramp trailer just fine. |

Yeah, I had to load my car on a trailer we borrowed from someone. And I kid you not, I had an inch of clearance on each side of the car. (It had the wood box around it. And I didnt have time to take it off. And the ramps were about 3 feet long. |

Easiest thing to do is give them a call. The axle savers are soft straps that go around the axles so you don't damage anything. My straps can hold over 10K pounds each. It's just good to know the car can't go anywhere. Get longer straps than you think you need. The ratchet handle should fold and lock in place when not in use. Not all locks are made equal. The Macs locks will not come open accidently.
I have an 18' dovetail that is set up really nice. It has 2x4 stake holes all around to build a fence. Tie downs are provided using heavy duty D-rings welded to the frame on the side of the trailer. The back of the trailer has a bar welded all the way across that can also be used as a tie down point. I had a pad welded to the front of the trailer about a foot off the deck where I mount a hand winch, and there is an eye loop just the right size to slip the winch hook on so I can tighten up the winch cable when not in use. If you want to go all out you can build some serious wheel fenders that a truck can drive over.
Never use the 2x4 stake holes for tie down points. When you do that you have to place the hook over the edge of a vertical metal plate. The hook can break because it's loaded wrong, and the strap will be bent at a sharp angle reducing the break force and even damage the strap. You want the hook and strap to be in a straight line under tension.
I pull with a truck so I have all the extra space I need in the back of the truck. I always carry a mounted spare tire and I have used it. Don't cheap out and use car tires. Trailers live a hard life because they hit curbs and run over everything you thought you missed. Trailer tires have a hard carcass and higher load capacity. The tires will probably rot before they wear out.
I also carry a set of wheel chocks and a ramp so I can lift a tire to change it out. All you have to do is drive one tire up on the ramp and the other will be lifted in the air. I tied together the wheel chocks with a rope so I can pull them both out with one movement from either side of the trailer. |

| Oh, I almost forgot. Get the best trailer brake controller you can buy. Your life if depending on that brake controller and the difference between a cheap one and an awesome one is only about $100. etrailer.com has great deals and that's where I bought my Prodigy. |

Can you get a picture of your hand winch? Cause I'm not coming up with ideas on how to power an electric one. And I'm assuming youve used it and it pulls a rolling car up fine?
Trailer doesnt have the d-hoops. So I guess I'll need to weld them on sometime. |

My D-rings are seriously beefy. Overkill is not a bad thing.
I bought a simple hand winch from a local farm supply store. It's like the one in the link below but with an 1800 lb pull capacity. There is a lock on the gears that keeps it from wheeling out under load. It pulls very easy until the front tires go up the ladder ramps. I have to put in some effort to get the car past each ladder bar, but it's easy enough. The rear tires go up really easy once the front is on the trailer. If I remember right, I bought about 40 feet of 5/16" cable. I wanted to have enough to use a snatch block if I had to pull heavy loads. The loop I have on the winch pad doubles up as a grab point for the winch hook if I do use a snatch block.

You'll have to order your own hook and saddle clamps for the cable. My local hardware store has only Chinese made parts. Chinese cast metal is total s**t and I'm not putting my life on the line with that. If the clamps or hook slips or breaks then the cable is going to snap back and rip a hole in me. I found American made parts at the site below.

that winch looks fairly close to one like used on boats. But I bet the strength rating is quite higher.
If the ramps had a wire mesh on top of them that would likely make it easier to crank up, but harder to drive up. Hum... |
