my motor has more blowby smoke than exhaust smoke lol

so i had my breather routed like a PCV and it just made oil come out of places i had no idea oil could come from, i had it pooled around the base of the intake manifold. so yesterday i just put it back to where i had it with just a breather, but so much steam comes out, and it gets into my heater vents and blows in the car, is there anyway i can fix this issue without without gettin new piston rings Laughing

it would probably be a huge job to replace the rings huh.... Confused

Rebuild engine.

Get new engine.

OK im usually wrong, but here go's.
if u have PCV as normal and oil is coming out, sounds like the PCV valve itself is bad and pressurizing the crankcase.??
and if i saw lots of "steam" coming out a vent, i would check my oil for water. cause it might b water insidecrankcase(not good)-from a bad gasket?

goodluck

Mike, his rings are shot. Engine compression is pressurizing the crankcase beyond what the crank vent system can handle. When he says steam he means oil vapor.

Luke, unless you feel like rebuilding the 305, I'd start shopping for a nice 4" shortblock on craigslist.

could i just get another 305 or 350 bottom end and swap them and put my heads and intake on it??

if it comes down to it, ill just take the thing apart and replace the rings, dont really have too much time or money for a rebuild

DBL_TKE has his old LB9 for sale... i could just buy it and swap them....

a 305 with new head gaskets is on CL i think it might be Kurf's

would it be easier to do another swap or just do the rings, both would probably be the same amount work

Replacing the rings without rebuilding will land you in the same spot.

You'd need to mic the cyl and see if you could get by with ball honing. Which, I doubt, if you have that bad of blow by.

Yes, get another bottom end and put your heads/cam/intake etc in.

ok thats what i was thinkin whole new bottom end would probably be easier

also i want to get the correct intake manifold cause i have an 85 block with i beleive a 86 tpi unit, and i had to drill out the two middle holes of the intake to fit the angle of the bolt holes on the head, so i want to get the correct intake manifold if im gonna be tearing the motor apart

Yours probably isn't from an '86 as only a few '86 motors got the Vortec style heads (as well as one piece rear main seal). I got a TPI intake from my '86 T/A with non-Vortec style heads. You could have it cheap. Wink

ok cool, so i dont have vortec style heads i dont think, so why is my intake at the wrong angle

also, lets say i do replace the bottom end, am i gonna be sorry for doing this because i just swapped it and didnt rebuild any part of it? cause i honestly have a lot more time than money right now, i just want to be able to breath inside my car and not die from inhaling blowby Laughing

Perhaps your intake is from an '87 or later motor?

Watch CL's for a 93 - 99 Vortec 350 from a truck or van. You should be able to pick one up dirt cheap, swap the heads and other parts off of your current engine or....leave the much better Vortec heads on it and ad a Vortec TPI intake.

Not a vortec motor, but would be a decent step forward from the worn out 305.

Offer him 200 bucks for it and pull it yourself.

Ok .. vortec heads are completely different then what you have. Real vortec's only have 8 bolts holding the intake on.

The intake bolt pattern was the same from the beginning up until 86. Then in 87 when the valve covers went to center bolts the middle 4 intake bolts had their angle changed. So 86 and earlier intakes will bolt on the same vintage heads. 87-92 intakes will bolt on 87-95 non LT1 heads. And 96-2000 chevy truck 350s had vortec heads which require the specific lower intake to fit.

The 2 different tpi intakes can be modified to fit any of the non vortec heads by ovalling out the center holes.

kurf has a motor that i think im gonna get from him

its a 1991 LB9 motor

does this motor have all the same angle holes? if they are all the same im gonna need that manifold, cause i just dont want to have ovaled out holes i want all the bolts to be in good and make sure they are tight so i have no leaks

If it's an LB9 motor it would have originally come with the later TPI intake on it. There is no applicable difference in ovaling the bolts, the intake will still seal effectively. If you're worried about the aesthetics, just put washers on it or something. Razz

so the motor is a 91 TBI motor so that would be an LO3?.... does that change anything ? will the manifold still bolt up?

well lets just say i didnt oval them very well, and its kinda hard to get the bolts in there, i would rather just get the right manifold, so i need a 87+ manifold?

Luke, you have an 87+ manifold on an '85 motor if I am not mistaken.

you are not mistaken, i remember now that the manifold is from a 87.

so would kurf's L03 motor be a problem? are the heads or anything different?

Should fit better. The difference in angle was based on model year, not style of intake. I actually seem to remember Chris running an LG4 carb intake on the Berli with ovalized bolt holes.

My only worry would be the fact that you'll still be rolling a POS base-model engine, but it ain't gonna be any worse than your peanut-cammed LG4, and knowing Bruce you're probably getting a kicking deal on the pullout. Razz
