Operation th400 is under way. I think I have most of the parts now. The bushing set is supposed to arrive tomorrow. I have a "master" overhaul set with new clutches and steels, a shift kit, manual, and a 2500rpm 10" redneck convertor. I'm afriad to see what it converts rednecks into.. my imagination says something like Flea... which is real scary! Razz

The convertor looks like a toy compared to stockers. But it sure doesnt feel like one.. heavy. It also has anti balloon plates which I hear is a must for ponchos.. Anyway here's some eye candy.

And the tranny's now on the ground. Stock convertor is 13" diameter compared to this new ones 10". At the very least I should be saving some trans fluid! Laughing I drained the stocker and it actually feels lighter then the new one.

That is indeed the stocker. It fills the bellhousing completely. 15" diameter IIRC. Stalls at around 1900. No no no...

I'm looking forward to setting the idle without it pulling way down in gear.

I"ve only busted one automatic in all the years i've driven. Normally even old trannys in cars that have been sitting in fields for years still work. This th400 did.. but this car looks to have been around.. alot.. and the th400 is definatly hte stocker.. 1/2" thick crud built up over the whole thing.

Some progress pics.

All torn down.

Worm trails.

Is there anybody in there?

The problem. Some of the clutches in the forward and direct clutch actually still have the borg warner writing on them, yet look like this.

Started going back together tonight. Rebushed the pump, got the planetaries back together new bushings everywhere so far. Also returning the B&M shift kit. I discovered a website that shows me how to do the same thing with no money. Also shows how to dual feed the direct clutch so that the trans will hold twice the power in 3d gear.

Holy moly.

What makes things like that happen? Guess that explains the slipping pretty well though. Wink

I'm told its water in the trans that makes the clutches do that.

Anyway, It's together! and its working! LOL

I sent the B&M shift kit back, I found a tranny guy that posted a bunch of free shift mods on his web site. He showed how to dual feed the direct clutch, block the 2-3 accumulator, modify the 1st gear valve to hold at any speed, what holes to drill to what size in the seperator plate, and which check ball to leave out.. Works pretty good. Shifts are quick but not harsh.. I almost like them harsh. Laughing

The convertor is real tight. Barely notice actually, and it still pulls the motor down some. Just doing the brake stand method I get about 2k before tires spin. Yes, I know thats not an accurate measure, but I'm usually too busy watching stuff besides the tach on a regular takeoff. Motor pulls real good with this setup though. It's got an abundance of low end torque.

It sure takes alot less trans fluid with this little convertor. It took 8qts exactly to fill the th400 to the full mark. Usually its more like 12 or even more.

Next little project is to get the distributor moved a tooth so I have more adjustment to play around with.
