|
|
Okay I brought a 91 firebird and had a bad bearing. Got a motor from a parts car 3.1 (Never Heard it Run) Checked the bearing etc.
Put on New heads
Seals
Gaskets
Freeze plugs
New parts
Started car Found out the new injectors from ebay are crap.
Found Water in the oil (Milk Shake)
Drain it and change oil and filter same thing happened.
Did loose some anti freeze from the raditor
Did a compression test and have above 150 PSI in all cylinders.
I am thinking its and intake gasket leaking since I have good compression.
No water shooting out of cylinders when cranking.
Anything else to check.
This is going to be my daughter car when she leaves for college _________________ kurfbird

| Bad seal on the headgaskets when the heads went on, or the intake manifold as you suspected. |

How can I tell which??
Guess it I pull the intake off and there is anti freeze there. Then probably intake. Dont want to do this twice. Well in my case three times. _________________ kurfbird

an old trick was to run car at idle Carfully remove rad cap and if u see bubbling then its prob. head gasket.
odds are its a head gasket-did u have block decked and heads milled?
after 2 times it should be alot quicker to do this time:) |

That only works if it's compression to coolant, which he already ruled out. Can still be oil to coolant without immediately involving the cylinder seal.
Bruce, I'd just buy another gasket set and reslap it. I recall gasket sets for the 60* engines being fairly cheap.
You could try and pull the intake off and take a look to see if there's an obvious failure point, but that's just more trips to the parts store if you're wrong. |

well i have seen it many times, guys do a compression check all sat, muddy oil etc.... when u run a comp check cold it may seal and give good comp readings, and when u heat up motor, then u have the head gasket issue show up as the gasket fails under stress
so donot deal in absolutes as that can lead u down the wrong path and makes troubleshooting much harder. all things are possible my friend.
with these motors it will be either the head or intake and I would put money on it being a head gasket or head bolts not installed using sealant. If not those then a mechanical issue with block (crack) |

| On the 3.1, the timing cover also has coolant pass thru it. I have seen them cracked from heat, but not to the point of leaking coolant to oil... but it is possible. As well the gaskets could leak and do same thing. |

Yeah, I replaced my timing cover because of that a year or two ago. Fortunately, it leaked to the outside and on the ground. _________________ 92 Camaro

Forgot about that one. You're totally right, that's also a very good possibility. |

Okay
I applied pressure to cylinders with push rods out no collant ran out the radiator.
Twilightoptics sold me the heads. Saud they were decked etc. They ahve good compression.
Carefully drain colant and removed intake gasket. Feresh collant on the top not mixed.
Made sure passages were dry.
I think its the intake. I think I screwed up the torque on this intake.
Head bolts were repalced with selant on the threads. _________________ kurfbird
