I bought a clutch fork for a 5.7L TPI Camaro. The parts guy said they didn't offer it for a 5.0L.

Well we all know how smart parts guys are. They're as dumb as the computer screen nowadays. |

| I had a parts guy try to tell me that the only engine ever offered in a camaro was a 350. Thought about telling him all about the old iron duke but thought his head might explode |

| Not only did they make the 305 you're all familiar with, GM also made a 305cid V/6 for gmc trucks. So the dudes wrong twice. |

| They could be bought in a gmc 1/2 tons too. They burned tons of gas, and if you revved them up over 3500 they come apart. But torque was incredible and they lasted forever if ran right. |

I don't even want to get into some of the idiots I've encountered who stood on the other side of the parts counter.
The ones at Shmucks seem to have the most "i-know-more-than-you-cuz-I-sell-parts" attitude. _________________

| I went to NAPA one time to price out headlight motors for my firebird, the guy looked me straight in the eye after punching a few keys, and told me they don't exist. |

I was told a few years ago that the 3.1 V6 didn't come with a 5-speed. IIRC, I was looking into getting a chip for the ECM and the person behind the counter had a hard time finding that combo _________________ 92 Camaro

Problem lies in that it's expensive to keep knowledgeable people around. So young, ignorant people get into it. And a ton of them are fairly cocky once they've seen one or two training vids on how a starting/charging system works. |

How much can parts people really make? If they're good at it, they're probably retired and don't need to seek higher income.
Otherwise it tends to be punks who don't have a clue. Occassionally you'll get the decent guy who knows some stuff but you can't know it all being young. |

Well Im a parts guy, I just try to be as helpful as possible, GM's are my specialty.... I learn alot just from my regular customers. I don't make much, but it gets me by so I can put myself thru school. |

Being in the parts biz is a no win proposition. Do it long enough and you can get a fair grasp of a lot, but you'll never know everything. if you've been a tech in your past it helps a great deal, but many of us have never been, so you learn to listen close and think outside the box and never say never. You learn from your customers (those who actually have gray matter between the ears), you learn from your techs if you have them, and you spend down time researching stuff you couldn't find an answer to. If you're lucky enough to have a guy next to you who's done it a long time, you can pick their brain and learn a lot.
Unfortunately what you don't know you still have to rely on the magic box for--and they are notoriously unreliable. That's where experience pays off. I can't count the times anymore where I knew what was supposed to be shown in the catalog and it simply wasn't there. If you dig enough you can usually come up with it, but it sure is a pita. I always try to keep in mind that my customer may know his own vehicle better than I do--until they prove they don't. I try to think outside the box too, has the motor been changed for newer/older generation? Model I'm not familiar with? Do they have aftermarket parts that maybe don't jibe with what I'm showing? Is the vehicle modified in some way? The object is to find solutions.
Attitude means a lot from both sides of the counter. Customers who are know-it-alls, were GM techs for 30 years, former countermen, etc. can put the parts guy on the defensive right from the start and make it difficult to really listen to what the customer has to say. Counter guys who talk down to their customers, put them off while they answer phones, don't listen to the customers complaint/explanation create unneccessary tension, are rude, and generally ensure the customer will shop elsewhere the next time around.
Sheesh, end of lecture, lol. class dismissed! _________________ Vaneat-91RS
