It's kind of a late start, but since I still have the stock wheels for my 89 and they won't fit over its brakes anymore, I decided to use them for winter wheels on my 92.

Probably won't happen this winter, but I took the finish off one of them with generous amounts of aircraft stripper, a wire wheel, and 100 grit sandpaper. Aircraft stripper does wonders on the clear coat that was on the wheel I did, but took a little more work to get the red color almost all the way off. Then 100 grit sandpaper took the color almost 100% off. I used a small 80 grit paddle wheel to finish up the back side of the wheel as much as possible.

Now I have 3 more to do before I put a different color paint (black??) on them. Maybe three more weekends

Here is the result of about 5-6 hours of work (mostly waiting for the stripper to work) with an untouched wheel on the left.

looks good Al!

I always thought those wheels only looked good in the Aluminum color.

Hey Al, the wheel looks clean! the paint is nice, but that strip down look is..clean!

Yea i think the black is the way to go, but that basic aluminum look is crisp...that was some time on the clear coat, what a pain..but nice results for sure!

I thought about polishing them. Just too much work for something I'll use only in the winter. There's also a few blemishes that will take lots of work polishing to cover where painting them will take little effort. The red has got to go in any case because these are going on the purple car as winter wheels and I think black would look best Cool

Z06 wheels are still on the red 89.

The red paint won't go with the purple 92, so these get black paint and become its winter wheels. Cool

Where did you buy the aircraft stripper? I have clear coat peeling on my Ford truck. Would look better if it was gone altogether. I'm ready to buy new tires and that would be a perfect moment to do the job.

Aircraft stripper is available at my local NAPA. It also does a fair job of removing the paint underneath. Cool Costs about $35 gallon which was the only size available at my store and I'll probably need another.

Not sure yet, but probably. I want these a low maintenance as possible since they will be primarily winter wheels.

One down, three to go...

It's not perfect, but it'll suit my needs just fine. I still need to clean up the back side some more and maybe put some paint in there, then I'll see about a clear coat.

Al, you rock brother. I would have just rattle-canned them and drunk a beer. But you put some serious work into it, and it looks great. Thumbs up

Nice! Looks exactly like what I did to my S10 wheels! I have a picture around here somewhere. Can't wait to see them on!

Thanks, I can't wait to get them finished up. Two more to strip and three to paint.

Does anyone know where I can get a set of the rings that go around the center caps?? The car didn't have them when I bought it and the wheels don't look finished without them.

Which rings are you talking about?

The ones that fit in the recessed area of the lug nuts and surround the center cap. It's been years since I've seen them, IIRC they're secured by the plastic screw on cap for each lug nut. I have all but four of those lug nuts, but no caps which I also need to find....
