|
|
Hello crew, i want to put some valve covers on the TA, i am looking at the brushed and the chrome, kind of at a stand still on that one, i was curious what brand works/fits the best, my 305 is the stock motor with the breather on 1-cover, and yea i have the smog emissions, and AC as well, i have left that stuff on for the sake and ease of DEQ, i'm not to sure if that matters for the valve covers.
Suggestions are appreciated!
Thanks Rich

Pretty much any one will work. Since you have a pre-1986 car, you can use any perimeter bolt valve cover. If you are leaving all the emmisions stuff on, I would suggest you get short ones. you might have some issues with the heater valve, and other emissions stuff if you use tall ones.
I like polished alum. but, I would just get the style that you want. |

Don't get the cheap chrome plated ones from like Mr. Gasket etc. They don't seal worth a damn.
Brushed aluminum seal great. Like John said get the short ones to make sure they clear the A/C. |

Rich,
I have a chromed pair for sale, but they are Mr. Gasket brand. They seemed to seal okay when I used them though, but I had so much blowby with my old motor it was hard to tell sometimes!
While I've seen valve covers that aren't level...IMHO the problem lies more in overtorquing the bolts, and the heads themselves didn't have a flat surface, and had the usual cast surface, which often was porous, uneven in shape, and needless to say, did not provide a level surface for a gasket to seal. all the centerbolt valve covers had the gasket mating surface machined flat, and they tried to get rid of the "overtorque" problem by putting the bolts in the center to equalize the force on all sides of the gasket surface.
I think even cheapo perimeter bolt valve covers, as long as you have a reasonably level mating surface on the head will seal just fine. I'm sure the QC at GM wasn't any better than what Mr. Gasket has to offer.
just my .02. _________________

Hi Quasi and thanks for the input. You have made a great point in regards to the surface condition! i am thinking it is still decent, the motor has been well cared for, however that is a legitimate point. I am fairly picky about the mods i do, i still want the car to look clean and the parts to be an excellent fit / quality, are the covers still in sweet condition and how long were they on your car??
What are you asking for the covers? feel free to send me a PM if you like on the price, or throw it out there no problem, oh and does one have the breather hose (sorry, not sure of the technicle name on that one).
Thanks
Rich

Rich,
the price is $10, or a couple beers. I'm not too picky, mainly I'd just like to get rid of em.
They're in pretty good shape, they were only on for about a year. Each valve cover has grommet for a PCV/breather. I have the old breather, but its a little beat up, and you might do well to replace it anyway.

PM me if you want some more. _________________

<---also doesn't turn down free beer
When works best for you rich? I'm free next Friday. Dewey was suggesting that a dinner/pizza type meet-n-greet, is a good idea sometime in the near future.
It'd be a great chance for you to meet some of what I call the "core" group. _________________

Hey Chris, anytime is good for me! i'm around next week, i may have a relative in dodge, but he's an old party dude like me so no worries on that yack! Hey do you guys bring your women or is it just the dudes, no worries either way! But it sounds good, so let me know, if you and John want to grab lunch that's cool too, if there's food and drink...Im there! I grill 7/24-365 if i can, i have a freezer full of some tasty beef, right off of my buddies farm in Hillsboro, so i can make it happen here as well. Alright...i have to finish up my new nitro motor so i can go kick some ass at the track!!

Those look a lot like the ones that Cheezy has on his car, only they have been powdercoated red.
Who would ruin a perfectly good BLUE car, by putting red valve covers on it! |
