im still debating.... 3.42's or 3.73's?? someone help me out... its a 305TBI automatic... i drive it everyday, so it needs to stay streetable.
i guess my question is, are the 3.73's to steep?

3.73's or 3.42's should be fine. with the auto, you would probably do fine with 3.42's, but 3.73's aren't going to be too much either.

Why is everyone afraid of tall gears? 3.73 at a minimum. My 4.11's turn my V6 at 2700rpm on the free way with 25.6" wheels. With the overdrive in the auto its completely fine to run tall gears.

3.73's + T-56 = 80mph at a little under 2K. Get down and Boogie!

With your 700R4 I'm going with Dewey. Try for a 3.42 or 3.45. Cruising speed wont be your problem (2500rpm at 75mph), but getting out of the hole with a 3.07 first and 3.73's is a little wierd.

okay thats what i thought. since the first gear is so short in a 700R4 anyway. i wouldnt mind going to a T56 someday but its not in the cards yet lol
thanks for the input guys!

His V6 is built to rev a lot higher than your V8, so his shift is gonna come a lot later than yours either way.

3.73 are perfect. 3.42 aren't going to net much change over 3.23.
I've run the 3.73/700R4 Combo personally.

25" tall tire, 3.73, .7 (700R4 OD), 60MPH = 2100RPM.

4.11 wouldn't be too tall for a .7 OD.

I've got a .5 OD and went with 4.33.

hmmm well i am going from a 2.73 gear. im gonna try and stick with the 2 series carrier i have now.. any of you guys think a 3.73 ratio will have a better 0-60 than a 3.42? i know it should in theory...

If you are going to stick with a 2 series carrier... you have to have a 2 series gear. Up to 3.08 IIRC. 3.23 and above need a 3 series carrier or a ring gear spacer.

3.73 will yeild a better 60ft for the given traction. Slightly. It's going to put your bring your RPM crossing the 1/4 mile line up.... more than 3.42. Which is what you want. I gained 3 tenths in my old '85 TPI car. Went from 15.5 to 15.2 from 3.23 to 3.73. You'll cross the line around 4600RPM. with 3.73. 3.42 is almost 500rpm less at the stripe.

You can also get thicker ring gears and use your two series carrier. I would still use regular gears and a spacer though. I have had this set of gears on three differant carriers, the first was a 2 series. That way you can replace the carrier later with a more common 3 series and not have to buy new gears.

i was planning on going with the thick gears and just bolt those to my 2 series carrier... but thats a good idea with the spacer because id like to upgrade to an LSD carrier when i have some more in the bank... and that would be good since i wouldnt be limited by the 2 series carrier.

anyone have one of those spacers laying around?
because i can get some 3.42's right now for a good deal but there for a 3 series carrier

$45 for a motive gear spacer. Depending on how sweet the deal is on the 2 series 3.42's, might be worth the plunge.

I'm not 100% sure but you might need pinion gear shims so you can set the proper backlash, especally as its a new ring/pinion.

It's going to cost you $250-300 in labor to install a new ring/pinion.

It's going to cost you about the same for someone to install a Posi later on.

If you had a new posi it wouldn't cost you any extra to have them install it.

I suggest you save your money and do the ring/pinion and posi at the same time.

He was asking for a shop that can do this. The shop would get a full rebuild kit that would come with both Pinion Shims to set Pinion Depth AND carrier shims to set the backlash.

i kinda figured if i had someone set the pinion depth on the new gear ratio i want now, then when decide to swap in a posi then i get a 3 series carrier and all i have to worry about is setting backlash, i wont have to remove the pinion... right?
