So i have been autocrossing my 91 Lo3 5spd bird for a couple of years. As gas prices continue to climb i am afraid i wont be able to afford the fuel to get to and from the races , and still be able to pay bills etc without having to switch to a Top Ramen diet. I have kept her pretty much stock so that i could compete in F-stock, but after this winter im afraid im going to have to find a 4 banger autocross car. thats the bad news. The good news is that i can now modify the bird without having to check the scca rulebook.
The car is pretty much stock, except for a deleted cat, and a flowmaster muffler(stock skinny piping). with those 2 mods and a 3.08 peg leg rear i pulled my best 1/4 mile run 16.0 @86mph. I am looking to get into the low 15's high 14's, and these are the mods that i think will get me there. anything im missing or suggestions would be great.
3.42 gears im thinking about 2tenths quicker.
Posi 1tenth
3" cat back 1tenth
headers/ypipe 2tenths
aftermarket intake/open element 1tenth
Prom tuning 1-2 tenths
drag radials 1-2 tenths _________________ 1991 Firebird L03 T-5 |

I went 15.1 with exuast, and 3.42/posi on street tires.
You could also pretty much do the same setup I am running, it isn't pretty cheap to replicate, and put down what I think is descent numbers for a 305. With the stock heads, and a cam like mine, you should be in the mid 14's pretty well. The key is tuning it, my motor wouldn't run at all with a stock chip in it, after I put the cam in. You'll have to do the tuning.

| Not trying to be mean here. But if you cant afford gas to take it to the track... how can you afford to pay for parts to modify it?..... or buy a 2nd car? |

That was a typo. I meant it is cheap. Just and intake and cam. Put 208rwhp by just stabbing a cam in it, and the intake. Nothing special there. Just gotta take the time to tune it. I consider 208rwhp pretty descent power for an L03.

Yeah 170hp stock. IIRC Al dyno'ed his at about 140-145 rwhp, so with a cam, exaust and intake, on the stock heads, I picked up 60-70 wheel HP over stock. Not too shaby I don't think.

wow, thats not very much seems like with their small displacement you can wind the crap out of them. Does it come down the heads not flowing well? |

Yeah, heads don't flow well at all on the intake side. Exaust flow numbers are good though. Part of me would like hog open the intake ports on the heads, and see what you can do.
Well, I put the cam in my car with 180k miles on it, so I wasn't going to try to spin it to the moon.
Here you can see the diffrence the Heads made. The top picture is with the stock heads on it. Power really stays flat from 4k on. The second picture is with the ported 416's. You can see they are similar but from 4k on, the power keeps climbing with the new heads. Same motor, same cam, same intake. Only change was the heads.

Yeah, I had better switch to TPI, so I can get all that torque that wins so many races. |

Well i think im definitley going take a page from Deweys book, looks like all the mods are pretty straightforward Its really awesome to be able to reference all the stuff you did to your L03, your Camaro rocks! . my stimulus check should cover quite a few of those mods. im sure i'll have many questions along the way thx for the replies
