My sister sent me some of these, so I did some searching and found more. These were from Lake Huron this last winter up near Mackinaw City, Michigan which is at the tip of the lower peninsula, about 3 hours north of my home town. This happened while the lake's surface was frozen. Below, supercooled water froze, expanded and pushed through the surface, causing these incredible formations.

That's actually rare in Michigan, but more common in Antarctica. Still pretty awesome though.

Looks like the sister's secondhand e-mailed info was incorrect. These pictures were, in fact taken in Antarctica. Similar things can happen in Michigan and the winters can get bitterly cold.
