ok, my '86 hasn't been running for a while and we havn't been able to pin point what's wrong, and we don't want to send it to a shop cause that's where the problems began...

it started it fine in about october.. then i went to start it to drive in about 2 weeks after.. and it wouldn't start at all.. no power no nothing.. so we threw a battery charger on it and let it charge, battery was fully charged and still no power, i turn the key nothing, turn on the lights, nothing.. the fuel pump doesn't even buzz when i turn the key, no inside lights..

i've had the car since '05, and my uncle's owned it since it was new... car ran fine.. needed a new clutch, i didn't know what i was doing 100% and my grandpa tore his rotater cuffs (idk if i spelled t hat right) so he couldn't go do it himself, so we sent it to a shop, and the people there said they went to start it and it poped under the hood and smoke came out.. so they kept it longer.. and i finally got it back and had it for a month or so, and it started fine after i got it back.. then outta no where that happened to me.. anyone have any advice on what i need to fix it?

Sounds like a bad fusible link or the battery cables aren't tight, or the cables at the starter aren't tight, or grounds.

The battery power goes down to the starter. Big red cable. Then it goes to your fuse box. A few inches from the starter are "fusible links" they are essentially inline fuses that you can't just pop a new one in, you have to splice in. Anyways that acts as the fuse between the starter (battery power) and the fuse box. This way if there is a short before the fuse box, the link blows rather than starting a fire.

There should be 3, they connect to the same post on the starter as the battery cable and look like splice connectors in line with the wires (essentially they are), if you can pull on those wires and stretch or break the splice, then the link has blown (or opened up). You don't have to pull real hard the see if it's open.

The no lights or nothing deal sounds like the ground to me. Check and clean the ground at the battery and then also check that it is tight on the engine.
