So I got to start stripping that camaro today. Talk about a lot of fun! Man I learned a lot to. Got the engine out, and now its here in the garage. It runs so sweet, and doesn't smoke when its cold, I dont want to do anything to it except put it into the car!

There are a few things I want to check on it before I do though. I want to see if any after market trick stuff has been done to the heads, and what kind of pistons they are. (Forged or non) Then I want to know if its internally or externally balanced, and its suposed to be a 383, I want to check that.

Also, the carb is an Edlebrock, and so is the intake manifold, how do I determine what model they are?

3 inch collector, 3.5 inch cat back, no cat installed. How can I tell what brand they are?

Crane cam, should I pull it out to determine what size it is?

Things I will still need before she is ready to rock:

Fuel pressure regulator
Fuel pump block off plate (this had the pump right by the engine)
gaskets
oil
coolent

Fire her up and listen to her purr?

As for finding out what intake manifold and carb you have, just take the part number thats on it and call up an auto parts store and ask them to run it for you. They should be able to do it no problem.

Pistons? Look for numbers on the top.
383? Rotate the engine and measure stroke with a dial caliper from top dead center to bottom dead center. Measure bore with a micrometer (or dial caliper is the ghetto way)
Look for a big weight on the back of the flywheel (externally balanced)
Exhaust? You can't for the pipes. For the muffler look for a name.
Cam? Behind the timing chain sprocket there will be a part number.

Ghetto??

need bore guages to measure it with micometers, calipers will get you plenty close for ID ing what the bore is.

Also, if he hasn't pulled the heads off already, why not just put it in the car as is. Save lots of money and just run it. Thumbs up

I'm with stupid

I know you want to be sure this is really a 383 dude..... but for like $300 or whatever you paid to take this thing out, getting a stout 350 is still a bargain.

I'd leave it whole for now, and tune it, and get it in your car. Then you can put her up on the rollers with us in January, to see what kind of numbers she puts down. If they seem crappy for a "383" then tear into it and see what you have.

Ok. I been thinking that same thing, but I really want to know :p

What should I check out on the engine before I put it in? Anything?

Compression would be easy to do when its out. You could also check the plugs for sign of oil or coolant burnage.

To check the stroke, couldnt he pull the pan and do it from the bottom? Cost less, and less likely to not get something back together correct. I know its the ghetto way, but IMO faster, cheaper. Could possibly ID the crank as well.

Cam, Id leave it be for now. There may be a way to check lift at the rockers which would get you 1/3 of the info.

If your just going to throw the engine in your car, I would do a compression check and a leak down test to make sure the engine's valves and rings are holding compression from all angles. Cheap insurance can save you a lot of $$$ in the long run Cool

Someone told me that if you pull the timing cover off, the cam should have a parts number there....
