'87 2.8/5spd berlinetta or RS... is it likely to have the 3.42 open rear end?

I think that is the standard rear end for the V6 T-5 cars. My 92 3.1 with T-5 has that same rear end.

count on damn near anything that leaves the GM plant with a 60 degree V6 having a open 3.42 rear, unless the owner personally felt the need for a G80 option in the car.

Well you better be careful because I'm pretty sure they never made a Berlinetta in '87. I think they stopped producing them in '86. They did however make the Sport Coupe, LT, and RS (only in California though). That said, apparently all '87's with a 2.8 came with a 3.42 regardless of the transmission.

you're right DBL TKE,

86 was the last year for Berlinetta. 87 Had the type LT which was basically the same idea as the berlinetta. I don't know that you could order LT's with the Digital dash, though.

Don't know much about The Cali spesific cars.

with a 3.1 (so 90-92) and an auto you would get a 3.23:1
all MPFI 2.8s come with a 3.42:1. regardless of transmission
4bbl 2.8s depending on year could get a 3.08, 3.23 or 3.42 depending on transmission. at least according to TGOs tech data.

Lacks low end torque, but that's the motor. I think the spread is decent. 70mph turns the motor at about 2500 in 5th where the 3.08 on the LO3 turns about 1800 at 70mph.

and my LO3/700R/2.73 it'll go 70mph in second gear at 4700rpm (yellow line) just before shifting into "D" first goes to 47mph at the same rpm
if i could find one of those GU6 rear ends i think id like it alot better
