Pulled the chip out of the IROC. Like I thought it's a Hypercrapola Thermo-something or other. ECM is a 165 and looks all stock otherwise.
I'm looking at getting a Prominator over EEPROM's, since it seems easier, and possibly cheaper. Does anyone here use one? I think Ian said he has one in the Bird, but I can't remember.
Aside from that, I'm wondering if I should just start with a stock '87 BIN and work from there, or if I should go with an '89? I know a lot of guys use it to delete the cold start. The CS hardware is already gone on my car, I just need the richer injector setup when cranking. Gonna try and keep the MAF for now, but I'm worried about VATS being a problem if I use the '89 chip. |

I'm very new to programming, but the easiest thing to disable is VATS in the chip. It's just a flag you check.
I'm using an 89 bin on my 87 now. I'm playing with it to get some practice for the 350 I'm working on. From what I hear the 6E is the culmination of the all the work GM did on the 165 MAF before switching to speed density.
For programming I have both Tunercat and TunerPro RT. TunerPro is free and also does data logging. There are so many more things in TunerPro than there is in Tunercat. I'm sorry I purchased Tunercat, it's almost useless when compared to TunerPro.
I'm sure the "guru's here will drop by and offer more info also. |

I don't know what bin to start with, I'll let Paul, Mangus or one of the other TPI guys take that. BUT, All the GM tunes, can get a lot of gain from reworking the timing table. If you smooth that out real nice, and get your timing nailed down so you are in the 30*-34* range at WOT. Once you get that nailed, it is just a matter of getting the fueling right.
And yeah, use TunerPro, Mangus makes an AWSOME peice of software.

I've used TunerProRT for everything (tuning and datalogging). Great program. I also used a chip burner for my V6 car and had no problems with it. One more step versus the Prominator, but its not bad. Moates makes a cheap chip burner too. _________________ E30

Exactly. Use the Flash'n Burn to record your current BIN. Then save it! That is your stock bin. You can reflash the EEPROM as many times as you like (10,000 times I think is the life). If something doesn't work then reburn it with the old bin you pulled. Or you can get an extra EEPROM from Moates as well. I think they are 10 bucks.
Once you get the bin pulled, you can modify it with TunerPro. You'll have to find the right mask first. Thats when you find out if you have the AJYU or KSNB or whatever. The masks can be pulled from moates or tunerpro as well.

Follow the instructions. _________________ E30

I have a tunerprort file for a 89 vette TPI with manual trans. It uses the 6e code.
Plus you can download about anything from moates, even custom tunes. |

I bought the Burn1 from Moates. Works great! It's so easy to burn a chip, I can't see paying for some of the higher end stuff. Just be sure to keep a backup somewhere of your stock bin file just in case.

Cool, that sounds almost as easy as a Prominator. Now if I go with this setup would I need to get a stock chip for my car?
BTW, Tony, it's an '87 MAF L98. Was a 700R4 now T56. Don't know if it makes any difference. |

| You more need to be going by prom code like "AJAU" or whatever. More then likely the newer year will have a newer code. Which is what you would want to start from. |

Start with the ARAP $6E Bin.
Unplug your cold start injector.
Rework the timing table (ARAP has way too much timing)
Set all your extra Spark tables (power enrichment spark especially) to Zero.
Control all your timing in the main table. |

Perfect Paul, thanks. I actually have an older free version of TunerPro and a file with some BINs somewhere on this computer, so I'll need to dig that up.
As for the hardware, if I go with the Burn1 over the prominator, would I need to find a stock chip to use as an adaptor? |

| Is your chip soldered in? Mine has a socket adapter from Hyperchip that makes life easier. |

blue: Mine doesn't have a seperate chip. It looks sorta like this:
http://misterbill.homeip.net/prominator/images/7730nocover.jpg
The problem is that even with the adaptor, they're still using the stock memcal, which I don't have.
Tony: It comes free, or with a $30 registration. |

| I bought an adapter from moates for my 7730. I never used it, but I dont "think" it requires stock chip. I'll have to find it n look. |

| Get the moates adapter. You plug the stock chip's limp home mode portion onto it, then you use eeproms to burn with the burn1. |
