.. it's another.
so i fix the fusable link in the GTA today, get the fuel pump working again. all is well. so i go to jump the veesix car, since over the last week of not being driven (rental car travling for my job, both cars have not been driven in a few days) it's battery has died. i hook up the cables and let it sit for ten minutes or so, i turn on the ignition and it clicks, but no start. i get out to wait a bit longer and smell burning electrical... or do i? no smoke... smell gone.. must be my imagination. then i see a good size puff of smok.. no not puff, cloud, a cloud of smoke comes out, i rip the red jumper cable off the GTA and throw it towards the grass, i spin around quickly and see if i can find the wire.. i don' see the source, so i start touching things.. i'll gladly get burned to find the source, i find it, a fusable link wire on the starter has melted clean through. it's the one that goes to the red mystery connector on the firewall. i figure it must have shorted to the manifolds.. so i bridge it to hot and the wire starts to get hot, so i disconnect it and close the hood.
i'll trace it down tomorrow, but i have a short to ground somewhere.. worse yet, without that wire plugged in i get NO electrical to the ignition. i turn the key and get nothing.
fuse able links i swear... |

There's still a little light out, should go find out lol
I havent got any idea which wire you're talking about, nor would I know the exact routing even if I did haha, sorry I'm no help.
One thing about wires that ground out though, it's typically pretty easy to figure out where they are chaffed at. Places near suspension, engine accessories, and heat are where I check first. The places that are stationary dont typically have the insulation stripped off. |

| this wire runs along the back of the block. lucky for me i thought ahead while i had the trannsmission out and did not bolt the harness to the back of the engine.. this way when this shizzle happens i can actually get to the harness. i am hoping that allowing it a little more freedom is not what caused it to short out. |

| sure you didnt pinch it on the bellhousing/engine or chaffe it while putting the trans back up |

| perhaps.. i'll deffinatly look for that. i don't think it's pinched, because i have driven the car around 100 miles since the tranny job, and the wire did not burn up until yesterday. |

it was the wire that goes to the ignition switch on the column, it shorted out right near the column to the metal bulkhead that holds up the column, there was a sharp edge. i tapped up the wire and placed some carpet insulation there so this should not happen again.
i ran the wire directly to the battery and put in an actual fuse in line. problem solved. |

I feel your pain x.
I started what was to be a complete re-wire/upgrade my engine system. 32 day turn around I was planning.
1.Take timing cover off, double roller. Cant have double roller with this setup.
2.Go to install TPI intake. Didnt have right base..didnt know there was different ones.
3.Some of the wire diagrams I needed, didnt have and had problems getting. I know, should have done this up front.
4.Was praying it had fuel pump to keep up, didnt. Cut tank down n restrap up with 3/4 tank of gas. (rusted in)
5. Cant find a good fit set up sparkplug wires for this setup.
6.Go to start it, wont start. Found out wire system I was putting in had theft control. Didnt see it on diagram. Send ecm off to 3 hrs away to get it fixed. A month later its still not back. Buy new ecm and program to delete it.
6.Start it up. Massive oil leak in timing chain cover. Go to fix it, rip oil pan gasket. So now I have to hoist engine up for that.
expect in that process..
snap off manifold to y-pipe bolts. I have headers ready to go on, but dont have 200-300 to get a new y-pipe.
UGH, WHY?!?!!??! |

well, think on the bright side. Atleast now you know you should never buy a lottery ticket or get within 10 miles of a casino lol. That's some cruddy luck.
Tony, I'm glad you got it all figured out. Hope there's no more surprises in stock for your cars lol. |
