So as soon as I opened up my t56 I found bits and pieces of bearing races, plastic bearing cages and what looks like tips of teeth and the magnets were COVERED in metal shavings.
Teaser pics...
With the rear case off.
The magnet and chunks.

Wow... that would explain some of the problems, yeah.
Do you have a puller big enough for it? I've been reading up on it and apparently you need like an 20" gear puller or something. |

Schultz, let's just say that the inside of my transmission has a crapload of metal dust on all surfaces. It's shinier than your noggin.

Mine's not that long, but I'll just make it. That or borrow it from work. It may take me a bit longer because I don't have a press but I can take whatever I need into work and do it there for free.
I'm actually really excited about doing this rebuild. I've always wanted to learn taking apart transmissions. |

When you get this one back together I'd pay you cash to do the same thing to mine. Third is junk, and it often feels stiff going into some gears, although that might be a clutch thing.

SSHHHHHHSHHHHH. If he blows the welds on his manifold, then I might beat him this year at dyno. |

I like how you preface that with "If". Dude, when I get back together I'd love to try another one but it's almost as cost effective to just order a complete unit from sixspeedsinc. |

"If"... Fixed that one.
Their site is down (yet again) and I don't remember what they charge for rebuilds.
Did you buy all new everything, or were you going to tear into it to see what you needed first? |

| Their stage one is only 950 + 500 core minus bearings which are a $160 extra. I bought it all, just in case. I don't really want to tear into it again for awhile. I hate when my bird is down. Since I also lost the trans in the blazer, I'm forced to drive the path. |

| Geez. That sucks about the Blazer. Was it just a low fluid burnout? Damn thing pissed fluid all the time. |

I assume it was fluid loss, evertime I checked it, it was fine level wise.
Yup, the mudbathfinder! |

More pictures of inside the case! I finally got time to tear it down!
I yanked the 5/6th gear assemblies off and a huge chunk fell out, luckily it was from the main section of the case. It's about a 1/2"x1/2".
More parts as I pull things.
Right after I pull the main body off.
Oh wait, is that supposed to be attached? That's the famous aluminum 3/4 shift fork.
More work tommorrow! |

| Yeah, if my puny 305 tore the aluminum one apart I can just imagine what your motor would do! I'm amazed they put that behind stock LT1's! |
