Well, not 3rd gen related. This happened to my '98 Buick Regal today. I was whomping on the gas, and as soon as the downshift happened, the weld around my resonator cut clean off and left me with dangling exhaust and a car that sounded like it had a coffee can at the exhaust tip.

So.... I am taking this as a sign, that the car reaaaally wants a catback system Wink lol. I know what sounds I like for 3rd gen exhausts, but supercharged v6's I have no idea?

I've looked around, but all of the brands claim "oh, it's not too unbearably loud, sounds great at idle!". Then I look up on regalgs.org (which I have tried to become a member of several times, with no success, so I cant ask them, ugh), and those members will say that SLP exhaust is uber flippin' loud, and the "whisper exhaust" is anything but!

If anyone has any clue as to a good exhaust system (muffler choices particularly I guess... I have pretty much figured I want a magnaflow resonator) that would resembly something a little sportier, but still something you may think "did it come from the factory like that?" would be real nice, and what I'm aiming for!

I have basically the same motor as your do (minus the SC) in my 01 camaro and I have a flowmaster 80 series on there, I'm pretty pleased with the setup. Basically a cat-back system, but it was fabbed by the dude at the exhaust shop the way I wanted it. Ended up being cheaper and easier than finding a good one.

I have the SAME motor in my GTP. I have yet to find ANY 3800 with a good tone.

Have you removed the u-bend yet?

I have heard just taking out the resonator alone gains a few mpgs. But leaves you with alot of revirberation (?) in the cab.

you could go to clubgp.com and ask. They have the same motor/underside.

Thanks guys. I hopped between clubgp and regalgs alot, found pros and cons, found which combos seemed a little milder. Frankly I wasnt very pleased with the way the bolt on catbacks were. There was an excellent catback system for it though, from Hogans. It's basically just a 3" mandrel bent exhaust pipe system. Comes w/ a resonator that most cut out, and no mufflers, for 200 bucks + shipping.

I ended up getting way more for the car than I really should have (i'll be paying it off for the next 6 months I think... good thing I just got my credit cards paid off, ugh).

I got pacesetter coated headers w/ a catted downpipe that eliminated the u bend (1 3/4" primaries, 3" collectors, mandrel bent), a ZZP Whisper resonator (it doesnt muffle much apparently, but should keep raspy noises and other annoyances out that the muffler cant), the Hogan 3" mandrel bent catback, and a magnaflow XL 3 muffler.

Most of the guys seemed to be going w/ a 2.5" exhaust, I decided to go w/ a 3" and a muffler that didnt flow too well. Should sound stockish (I hope), just with a better tone and better flow.

And what would I be w/ a full exhaust and no intake? lol. So I bought a JMB fenderwell intake (the only designed intake that actually takes in colder air than what's in the engine compartment that flows better than stock).

The root cause of my exhaust cracking was my motor/tranny mounts I believe, so I ordered some nice ones from wbodystore, for about 70 bucks.

All in all I think I spent around 1400 bucks.

On the flipside, with these mods I should have room for some pulley without knock, so just a tuned ECM and a couple pulley sizes down and I should be faster than C4 vettes atleast.

I have seen some guys with just u-bend deletes and ported manifolds, cold air intake and colder plugs with a smaller pulley run high 13s, Mid 13's would be nice?

Not that it's a fair comparo but I've got a magnaflow on my bird and I like it a lot. It's mellow, with just a hint of lump at idle and doesn't get obnoxiously cool sounding until 3.5k or so.

Does the wiz-air intake not fit the regal? I have that, then modded it.

I am not sure. I looked around and found that the intake system that pulled up the coldest, densest air was the JMB Fenderwell intake, easy to install and looks pretty good, plus it was competitive in cost for everyone else.
