Hello everyone,
I haven't posted in a while so I thought Id give ya an update.
I have been really busy, working 7days a week, Iam starting to get tired.
(Starting to hit the sack at 7:pm).
My 16 year old bought a D2 Caterpillar dozer the other day, brought it home but haven’t begun to work on it, should be lots of fun, we have a John Deere track loader with a backhoe but he wanted his own, so he saved his money and we found one, good for him!!! Way cool as well.

The older son has been saving his money from his full time job he got, (machinist helper) and he is doing well, he’s want to quit next year and go to the police academy!!!! Wow, cool as well.

ENGINE
We bought a
Lunati pro series crank, 4.125 stroke (this thing is sweet, but big bucks)
Bought a set of Luntai Pro Mod rods as well, (6.125 length,
Also big bucks) but I was not happy with them and we are shipping them back, and swapping with a set of Oliver billet rods
Oh ya we also have the special bearings for the crank
Crank and rods good to around 1200hp and 9,000Rpm’s plenty good

CAM (not nailed down yet)
Large circle base cam,
Solid roller
Will be some where around… INTAKE 264dur at .050 .420 lift at cam.. .672 with 1.6
Exhaust 268dur at .050 .420 lift at cam .630 with 1.5
Centerline 113 with 2 degrees advance built in.. (Supercharger cam)

We are on our way.
Have talked with many engine builders around our country and no joke,
This engine could put out between 750 to 850 hp, crazy...with only 7 lbs of boost.
That is if we ever get it done. Looks like it will be in the $10,000 dolor range on parts and machine work total.
Next buy is custom 44cc dish pistons with total seal rings, tools steel wrist pins. It should be another grand or just under it.
After that we can do a mock up on the short block, and check and measure things. . yaaa...

Well what do you think??

Thanks
Scott

What heads are you going to use on that beast? And fuel management system?

Well they want me to run Brodix Track 1 Series Cylinder Heads 23 deg.
But Iam not sure I want to do that..
The budget on the heads is some where in that price range, about 2,500 bucks.

Yep we will be using to stealth ram intake, we will do what ever it takes to get the hp we want at the rear wheels.
I do envision taking our intake in and having it ported and matched to the heads,
With 7lbs of boost, Ia not sure what thats going to take but Iam sure it will mean some more money...
Should be interesting using the stealth, with boost.
Oh ya,
We also bought the Holley commander 950...

So what do you guys think about that cam and the specs? why the 2 deg built in, I shouldn't need that correct
Looks like it should idle fine, with no lope.
but was wondering if it was enough.

thanks\

a 268 cam is typically what's used for a mildly built 350 that'll have a little lope at idle. You may want to go a little more to see full gains from your supercharger and heads. You'll probably want a custom camshaft made. CompCams can do this, you call up their tech line and talk to a guy there, tell them what you've got, what your goals are, and they'll try to figure out what will be best for you.

Ya that’s where we got this cam and spec, said this was it with that engine combo, would be a special grind cam.
But I have not looked into others yet and wanted to get a idea of what you guys thought. You guys have allot better knowledge on this stuff than I .

We are starting to look at back half’s for that car as well, its a ways off but might as well look and see what kind of work this requires, looks interesting. But we want to keep the inside of the car like it is now, with the exception of a cage
I should be able to do it when we get my shop built and the car hoist in there this winter.
I have been to the county several times to start this monster process for a building permit, and its been a real pain. We filed some paper work for it, but still haven’t chosen a building yet, thinking of going 16 foot high walls

Scott, how high are you planning on reving?

Bobby, That was 268*@.050, not 268 advertised. That is a big boy cam. With superchargers, you don't want a lot of overlap, that will bleed off cyl pressure since you are focing the air in, you want the exaust valve closed so you can pressurize the cyl as much as possible on the intake stroke.

The thing I would worry about is head flow for a motor that big, spinning some RPM, I think off the shelf heads are going to be your weak link. You might want to look into getting the heads ported proffesionaly, then have you intake ported to match.

Not sure on the revving, But maybe around 7500 max, that’s what everybody was saying, They say the engine would have incredible torque up to around 6800rpms
They said that should take us into the upper 800hp range.
If I can flow enough air through the stealth ram intake.
Those Brodix Track 1 full cnc flow alot, so I will be paying some one to make sure the intake and heads flow the required amount, around 230 size runners
An as of now I don't know that specific number, yet, but it must be allot.
I may have to weld some more material on to the intake ports so they can be made a bit bigger, again not sure yet, but will make it happen if we half to. For some reason my son wants to run that specific intake, the stealth.
I can also imagine them doing a SIEMES runners about an inch or so down On the intake, I guess that would shorten the runners by about an inch...

Most cams have 4-6degrees advance built it.

I didn't know that...
Anyway, I sure would like all the crewbies to give me some input on this stuff,
Its a big project and I would like the advice, it would help me out and educate us on why these other engine builders want a specific part.

And maybe, we need to change something from what these builders are saying. I have noticed allot of them don't want to explain things, as to why and what, that does for you....that is some of them....
I have been buying parts from an out fit in Louisiana, and they seem some what ok as far as going into some detail on parts..

I don't know that anyone on here has done something as big as you're trying to do.

Sounds like the heads and intake might be kinda small for your cubes/cam.

Again, haven't done anything this big.

Ya you are in a different league with this build up Scott Wink

I am very interested in following your progress though. Should be a monster. Also, glad to hear things are going well for you and your family.

d'oh, I missed that. I still stick w/ having a custom cam made to match head flow numbers and HP goals though. Off the shelf parts I can see getting anyone to 500hp, above 600 and you definetly need some custom parts.

Oh..
So you guys think this is over your head???
Thought maybe I was an A$$ or something and you guys didn't want to help me out, (crap I don't know), no body said nothing much about this thing, or our little project...Ya I guess I was out in the cold all alone!!!!LOL....

But hey let me direct you guys to this link.
Its a very similar build, Same Block, Same crank, and yes Iam sending those Lunati Rods back, for some nice Olivers.... Thursday!!!!!!!
But check it out.......let me know what ya think....
Also we are leaving it Dry sump oiling I think...
http://www.4wheeloffroad.com/brandpages/chevy/131_0407_450_ci_small_block/

Bad thing is, the thin rings will not last, bummer, but we are going with it anyway.....will do a refresh if and when we have to....the compression height is tight.....that’s why the thin rings, and I didn't want to compromise on the crank stroke, so I stayed with the 4.125
(good for me) that will give us the Magic 454 number......

Anyway I respect all of your opinions, dont be shy...tell me what ya think as well...
You could always give me some advice on my shop Iam building or maybe that D2 dozer we have to bring back to life, no that’s going to be fun....I have done that once before to an old John Deere, took 3 months of greasy dirty smelly work….
But having lots of fun with it now….

I think going with the Oliver rods is a VERY good move. With that long stroke and high-rpms, and lots of power, you are really going to be working the rods. That long stroke will give you really high piston speeds, so you need the rods to hold on to the pistons. Rods will be critical on something like this.

It sounds like you are making some smart choices, and talking with people with experiance. Like everyone else said, none of us have built anything to this level (yet). So we can help a little, but we are all more just really interested in seeing how the build goes!
