Got the Motor mounts all fabbed and built the tranny cross member today.
Everything turned out amazingly well. Experiance with metal sure pays off.
Didn't have to enlarge a hole or anything
Best of all the motor comes out no problem with the mounts ON the block. So it will be cake to remove/install the engine.
Like a Glove. Centering the engine wasn't too tough either. Load leveler is your friend.
The S-10 Shifter makes it so the E-Brake can stay... should I choose to keep it.
Going to need more than v6 power to shred 1/2" round in tensile! Used the stock motor mount sides. Just chopped them off so they have the notch and proper hole/punch.
Thanks for the steel Chris! Now go take a crap before you soil yourself. Damn constipation. LOL
So yeah. With the motor mounts on and the cross member in I thought I'd drop the cherry picker and see just how far she sat down with the motor/trans.
Yeah.... Not much... Actually something like 1/8"!!!!! Sure there is 50lbs to add with the intake, clutch, driveline, wiring.... but even when I stand on the front bumper, it only moves another 1/8"! It's got a rake in the front. We must have seriously pulled alot of weight off this bad boy. It used to sit a little heavy in the front with the 1.6L 4cyl.
The "member." Note how far down the 4x4 oil pan sits! It's going to be "edited."
Since the motor was in figured I'd toss the starter on and see what kind of clearance I had on the passenger side for exhaust and future 2.5" turbo exhaust.... um... yeah....
I guess they made the A-Arm bracket with a giant hole in it just for this use! Looks like I'll be cutting out some floorboard and inverting the V to make a larger cavity to accomodate engine vibration/torque over.
Tomorrow.... Make the pre '87 2.8L 4x4 pan more like a Post '87 2.8L Chevette pan!
Then I can start getting parts to button up the engine. Then it's on to figuring out how to get this baby some fuel!
Then wiring.... hehe.... so john... you know lots about wiring now right?! |

Sweet!
You have great fabrication skills, but I gotta say the roundstock in the motor mounts is kinda spooky. Tranny crossmember looks awsome! |

SWEET! I can't wait to see it done. You're doing some pretty cool fab work. Keep it up!
Is that an s10 tranny or a camaro? |

I know a bit about wiring, but I'm not in the area. So if you have questions, give me a PM.
Dont like the motor mounts, but trans member looks great!
I'm going to guess camaro trans, s10 bell and s10 shifter?
For some reason that thing screams get lowered and autox it? Short n narrow. Just beef up the suspension? |

The welders on the motor mounts were just hard tacks in the picture. When I got them off and the motor back out they got 3 pass welds. So the base of the weld is abot 1.5" in diameter. There's no way these things are going to fail.
The stockers are 1/8" thick and boxed square. So the thick plate and the two round pieces with that much weld will be more than enough. Plus this thing isn't going to have the torque to rip them over. The passenger side only see's compression anyway. Didn't really have alot of options for getting the two pieces connected, yet leaving room to unbolt it incase I couldn't slide the engine in with the mounts attached to the block.
Ended up using the Camaro trans. The s10 trans would have had the shifter hole forward passed the stock opening. Too much reach and into the dash. BUT it'll be good for parts! The input shafts do look the same so I'm going to try swapping the s10 input to the camaro. The camaro input got chewed up at the pilot bearing.
S10 bell and S10 shifter and clutch fork. Cable clutchin' it!
We'll see if it gets lowered or not when I get the bigger brakes and the rear on to fit the big wheels.
Auto-X might be an option. Wish there was some of that down here! |

There is, at PIR. I just haven't gone much since Dan got his job, and I am not a huge fan of chasing cones for 3 hours, to get in 4 minutes of driving.

Watcha gonna do with the concrete?
I'm just glad you could use something from that transmission! From a mechanical standpoint, I think your motor mounts are substantial enough to hold just fine. |

Concrete, black top, something large flat and paved so we can go auto-x ourselves.
I'll be using the speedo drive gear off the s10 trans to start also. In addition to the bellhousing/clutch fork. Since I'll be finding a 3.73 rear s10 diff, figure the speedo gears are probably set for 3.73. That's what alot of those 2wd trucks came with.
Gotta go hit the JY and see if I can snag a bracket for the cable clutch. Atleast to get an idea of size and position. Compare it to the cable from the chevette. |

| IIRC The S10's used threaded rod for everything up to the firewall with a pivot point down by the lower part of the firewall. There was a small 1' chunk of cable that went through the firewall and to the pedal. The truck I took that tranny out of was like that at least. |

| Hmmm. looks like i'll have to make a bracket then and tie it onto two of the bellhousing bolts. Just not sure how to keep the forward/backward flex from happening. |

I'm trying to get a rally cross started up here. I know people with near stripped corn fields that will donate the use of their land for a "Cornfield 500" LMAO!
I can get you some pictures of the actual setup if you want something to look at. |

Blue, like I said before, if you get it going, let me know. I'll bring the Audi up, the bigger the turn-out is, the better luck of getting people to show up several times.
Also, let me know, I'll post on some of the Audi boards I got to, a lot of hte old audi guys are really inot rally-x and such.

rally cross... basically, auto crossing on a huge grassy muddy dirt field with cones placed at random and a semi-driven pathway that gets watered down every so often to make things less dusty
Mer was really into it, gave that Tiburon hell and a half doing that.
It's pretty fun |

That picture of me is just priceless. I'm sure it will be subject to later comments of jest and or photoshop fun in the future on this site.
Glad I could contribute somehow. (can I have my engine hoist back now, paul? ) _________________
