So the 2.8 has a few Issues. Thankfully the oil filter did it's job.

Since it's kind of a leaker I figured at very least all new gaskets.

Well I found some chunks on the bottom of the timing cover!

That was alot of slop. So while I'm at the junk yard trying to figure out how to get a 4x4 oil pan off an s10 without an engine hoist or a jack... I'll have to get the timing chain guide/baffle thing.

This motor is starting to get sludgey too. If I wasn't doing this on the uber cheap I'd for sure tank it and get everything re-done.... since the bearings look okay, no copper, small gouge in one... I'll just run it. If something happens to the crank I'll get the 3.1 stuff.

thats about average for a 6/60 and chain slop. But yes, thats the chain guide.

best of luck getting that S10 oil pan off without the motor out of the car. The only way we can reseal those is w/ the motor out, and turned around lol. I know you're trying to do it on the cheap, but maybe just go find one on eBay, and you'll thank yourself later Smile

Put a small bottle jack in your tool box, and unhook the motor mounts. Stack the jack on top of a rim or a block of wood, in the junk yard. Then jack up the motor. You might have to turn over the crank to the correct spot to get the pan off so it can fit between the k member and the crank. Changed my oil pump this way, it will be a pain in the ass but should work.

I did the same thing to replace the oil filter houseing gasket. Lifted it up off the motor mounts. I'm lucky enough to have a 3ton chain hoist in my garage. Lol.

I'd say the chain guide plate is pretty messed up. Putting a new one in will help out with the slop. Are you replacing the pan to make sure all the chunks are out?

4x4 pan fits better.

The chain guide is toast and the chain slop is worse than any SBC I've ever seen.

Think I may just build the pan. I'll see if a parts store has the chain guide.

The chunk is from the guide. There are two chunks that look the same. The bearings are fine as previously stated.

I think someone jumped this poor camaro. The oil pan has a huge K-member dent and one of the motor mount brackets bolted to the block is ripped apart.

You will have abuut twice the slop of a sbc since the cam is so far away. The chain guide is rather thick when its new and actually pushes the chain out a little which promotes constant wear (as opposed to just stopping vibrations of the chain).

The other 2.8 chains I had done weren't near this bad.

The cam isn't really that much farther away it seems....

well then, its good you replaced it. It looks bad in the picture, but terrible is hard to determine with a picture and missing guide. And if you can't pull the crank gear off, I've used a center punch to break the gear in half on more than one occassion.

I'll keep that in mind on the center punch. I've used pullers and the old cresent wrench+hammer method.

Figure the T-chain is kinda vital and rather have it fresh under 14psi!

ok, I thought you were trying to get a guide from a parts truck. Not a new oil pan because it was dented Laughing

But as for slop. Seriously, thats a bit, but these motors are well known for bad chains and often. GM doesnt say 50k for nothing. Ive had one slapping so bad at 140k that it cracked the TC cover and started leaking antifreeze. About 1/3 of the cover was worn away where the chain was rubbing, and chunks of the plastic off the guide were missing. But it didnt snap the metal like yours.

that is about a 3X the play mine had and i was jumping timing by +/- 12*.
