so i got a new job. here is the story.

i get a call on thursday the 6th from a friend in the IT/networking field (computers). he asks me what i'm up too, i tell him i am still working retail, and he asks me if i would be interested in a job. he gives me a phone number. i call it and leave a message. i call again the next morning and get a hold of the owner of the company, i send my resume over and he says i can intervew satarday morning. i interview on satarday and get the job. the only issue, it starts sunday. so i can't give two weeks notice at my old job... so i go in to the video store that night for my shift and tell the manager it's my last day... Sad

she understood that it was a great oportunity and there are no hard feelings. i am actualy going to be covering sundays for a few weeks while she breaks in my replacement.

job tittle and description:
i am now an independant network engineering contractor. the contractor part means i have to buy all my own equipment and tools and stuff, it also means i am only paid when i am on sight. this is not that huge of a deal however, because i am making almost double the hourly wage i made before.

what i actualy do:
i am contracted to a company to install VoIP telephpony hardware in banks. VoIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol. meaning phones on the internet (in a way). it's kinda complicated, but i go around to a different bank every night, upgrade the router with VoIP capability, install a new switch for the telephony system, install a few test phones and spend about 2 hrs testing a bunch of functions on the phone (like call parking, voice mail, remote forwarding etc...). i need to upgrade to a new UPS (battery backup for the server, and all networking gear, probably 75 lbs worth of heavy) i also have to verify the cabling the telecom guys installed and plug in a test router to test the new PRI connection. (like a T1, only faster). this last bit of my job is the only realy demanding part networking wise, as i actualy have to know router commands to do it. the rest is "technician" work, the last bit is "network engineer" work. the term "engineer" is a misnomer here as "network engineers" do NOT need 4 year degrees. unlike most jobs with 'engineer' in the tittle.

if you did not understand all that don't worry about it. just think "network guy" + "phone company guy" and you prety much have it.

i am prety psyched. it is going to net me alot of experiance, and will be a great thing to get my tech resume started. the company i am working for is a subcontractor of a subcontractor of a subcontractor of the bank in question, so it's actualy a prety small company. like i said the owner interviewed me. the office is wright over by chris's house, its near the fredmeyer on glisan.

so far my only complaint is that most of these banks don't just leave the network equipment room and telecomunications rooms empty, they store all kinds of crap in them, so you have to move boxes of extra deposit slips and old signage to get anything done. Rolling Eyes

Congrats man! Just getting your foot in the door is a huge accomplishment. What position are you aiming for as a future goal?

That sounds great man! I used to work for Alpha Tech where I designed Telephony UPS systems. Fun stuff.

Well.............if you look up and something falls off a really big plane, or it goes down..........I was on vacation the week we built it at Boeing.

Not sure yet. My start date is 9-21 and I'll be in training for who knows how long. I took a week off between jobs, then promptly got sick as a dog on my first free day. Crying or Very sad

Yeah.............sucks big time. So much for my vacation.

But, I will have the week between christmas and new years off paid........so go to work there, and 3 months later get a weeks vacation Wink

For now I'm just sitting here trying to figure out what heads to put on my new motor. The ones that Jake had didn't work out for me, so now I'm considering iron vortecs.
