I've got two ideas brewing:
1) I've had my eye on this Hilborn "shotgun" intake for a while. But I need a smaller version that will mate up to a carb. Has anybody seen anything like this anywhere??? I think it actually has a chance to work with the curvy lines of a Firebird.

2) I'm thinking of fabbing up a carb adapter with a rubber seal to a very small cowl induction hood. I'd fit up a flat rectangular air filter built into the hood. Has anybody seen this done? Any ready-made kits out there or is this a custom fiberglass job? |

| I just dawned on me that Glasstek is located here in Illinois. Hmmmmm.... one short drive could solve this issue. |

| That looks like it is for a dual-quad setup. |

| I like talking to myself. With a couple more replies to myself I might set a Crew record. A pathetic record but a record nonetheless. |

Dang, Dewey! You ruined my streak.
It can be mounted to a single or dual carb setup. At least that's what the text says. |

I replied.
I don't know that I would like that sticking out of the hood, I think I would have to see it done to descide though.
And sorry, a lot of us were out of town at a get together this weekend. |

| If you were forced to have an air cleaner above the hood, this is one of the best alternatives don't you think? Have you seen something better? I'm all ears at this point just searching for ideas. |

How far above the hood? I think a small like 2" cowl would look cleaner. But I am a simple clean kind of guy. I can't say it will look bad, I would really have to see it to see how it looks. I agree if you have to go above the hood by any large ammount, it will be better than a lot of those tacky over done scoops, I do agree.

It would be pretty much flush with the top of the hood with very little gap. Maybe even tuck the rear down just a tad. The problem is that my drive pulley doesn't clear the hood either. If I cut the hood then it's going to be open to expose the entire supercharger, with lines to hug the shape of the supercharger.
A cowl hood would have to clear the air cleaner and front pulley. |

i'd go with a cowl of some kind. the firebirds looks so clean without a big hole in the hood. but then again with a beast like that i don't think anyone is allowed to make fun

with the right cowl you should be able to pull it off... sadly though, the silly nostril hoods that nobody likes will have more clearance in the fronts than a cowl.
I saw something similar to the shotgun used on a highrise intake on an LS1... cut right into the SS hood and made good use of the hood scoop, sealed nicely... but it was run as a twin throttle body and there was also a nifty procharger attached to it. |

I hate the Trans Am style nostril hoods. They look okay on a Trans Ams, but look terrible on a 3rd gen, or Dodge truck, or Chevy Suburban, or Grand Am, or..... |

so does everybody else, believe me... but unless you find somebody willing to make a cowl hood specifically for you, you've not got a whole lot of choices in that department
i saw one on a monte carlo last week.
i twitched.
depends on what you want to spend at glasstek too of course, one off hoods aren't exactly cheap... not unless of course you make your own moulds... which isn't too cheap either really |

I'm very much a believer that you get what you pay for to a reasonable limit, anyway. Frankly, it will cost a ton to cut my original hood + $400 air scoop. That air scoop alone puts $350 back in my pocket towards a cowl.
You know, I live right in the heartland of hot rodding. I should go talk to a few custom shops and get a better idea what a hood would cost. I've got places within a couple hours like Glasstek, Troy Trepanier, and others. At least it would solve a mystery and help me focus on what I need to do. |
