yeah i found what i think is some 3.70 9 bolt gears in a 85 firebird. The gears and posi are the only things left on the rear. I was going to pick it up but I am unable to since i am returning to school. It is at the boring oregon U Pull It You Save. Make sure you ask a nicer guy there otherwise they might try to over charge you. Nice guy was on vacation when i went. Sad

You sure it's 3.70 gears and not the 3.27 ?

it said 3.70 on the larger of the two gears.

I can confirm it has 37 teeth on the ring, and 10 on the pinion. Counted them myself.

Both axles are gone, brakes/backing plates gone, and both bearing caps are off. I found one of the caps on the ground, didn't see the second one. The gears look good, nice pattern to them. It is a posi. They want $75 for it.

If I could get ahold of the moron that stripped the axles and brakes off this rear I'd beat the crap out of him. I couldn't beat him senseless, he obviously has no brains in the first place. A rare 3.70 rear and they stripped it. Damned idiots.

after all, isn't it the gear ratio and the Posi that are the rare pieces?

couldn't you swap the posi and gears into your 3.27 9 bolt?

Well.......if you have another 9 bolt rear with a less desirable ratio, you can just pull the brakes and axles and drop them on this one and go, instead of going to all the work of swapping the gears into another housing. The gears are already set up and had a nice looking pattern to them. I just can't see upsetting that unless you found a bad bearing on the housing from the junk yard.

nope didnt think of grabing the whole rear end. i should have done that though now that you mention it. The only problem with that for me is it is a lot easier to store a posi and gears compared to the entire rear end.

How did you get the pinion nut loose without an impact gun?? Did you have the special damn near 4 foot long bar to hold the pinion, and a long ass bar to break the pinion nut loose??

I put a pair of channel locks in between the rear case and the larger gear. Then I used a 1/2 inch ratchet with a cheater bar about three feet long. I was having a hell of a time getting that nut off, because the cheater bar was to long. I was considering just taking the whole rear out, but i ended up taking off the torque arm, and was able to get a better angle with the cheater bar.

Well I was wondering how you got it off. They are a real pain to do it with the rear still in the car.
