so a buddy of mine has a 1992 s10 blazer 4WD with a 4.3L TBI V6. the car will not run. it cranks and will start but dies immediately. he had a mechanic shop replace the distributor and it worked for a week or two but is dead again. it seems to be getting spark. the distributor has ALOT of end play for a "new" distributor. probably about half as much as my 2.8 had a while back.
it sprays fuel in while cranking, but seems to start and run for longer while i hold the throttle open a little bit. this led me to believe IAC, so i swapped his out with mine and nothing changed (yes i swapped back). i was going to check his Fuel Pressure but i cannot find a pressure fitting on any Fuel Rail or anything. how do you check FP on one of these?
his exhaust system was rusted to peices so i removed it all the way back to the cat, but i am having trouble getting the cat off. the mechanic told him his cat was clogged, i am worried it might be a situation like chris's 2.8 where the clogged cat has caused an exhaust valve to burn up or somthing.
what would you recommend i do next? _________________ 86' firebird (Junked in 2015). 88' GTA (sold in 2020).

You can't check FP without splicing into the rubber line.
Never heard of a clogged cat burning a valve. John's cat was clogged for a long time. And by clogged we mean like half the horsepower clogged.
When the motor is cranking is the fuel spray a thin cone or a big fat cone stream?
Check timing?
Check TPS voltage?
Get a scanner check MAP values. |

Check timing?

Check TPS voltage?

Get a scanner check MAP values.

| Tony, since they replaced the distributor I would pull it, and check to see if they "rebuilt" the distributor, or replaced the whole unit... sometimes in "total rebuilds" certain parts may be more difficult to obtain so they just swap over the originals to the new parts... i.e. check the gear at the bottom of the distributor. |

well, i tested his coil like the hynes manual said (DVOM to various points) and it tested bad, so i replaced that, also threw new spark plugs on since his had probably not been changed in many years. now it runs for almost a second before it dies, it also runs WAY smoother for that second.
i noticed this time upon close inspection that one of the fuel injectors/jets does in fact spray more like a stream and less like a cone. next time i go over there i am bringing a bottle of "starting fluid" and seeing if this is a fuel issue afterall. |

Just as an FYI On my burb i had that trouble after it had sat for allmost a year. It ended up being the fuel filter. The fuel pump could only push enogh through it to get it started but then couldent keep it up for more than a second or two. When i pulled it off you could bearly blow through it at all! _________________ 90 chev suburban 3/4ton 4x4, stock, rebuilt 350 w/TBI,th400, 3.73 gears, 33" pro comp mud terrains. |
