Did a big burnout last night, I mean a big one about 100 feet long, total smoke show down the road. Man she is running good,,, whew.......yeeeha.
I thought.

Pulled the car in the drive way, and parked it.
Went in the house.

Neighbor came over banging on our door, hey your car is on fire!!!!!!!!
WHAT!!!!!!OMG....

Ran out and yes flames were shooting out at the headlights, and from underneath the car.
Told the kid to call 911, got the hose out was able to pop the hood and got it out before the fuel lines went up (they were steel braded hose that’s what save the car) all the rubber hoses are gone, air-conditioning box melted plug wires melted, harness toast.

Engine is just a little suted up. I don't think it’s damaged.

But it looks like it started near the distributor/MSD wires/ maybe the coil wire
distributor cap is completely melted gone..

Wow...
This is unbelievable.

Don’t know what route we are going to take right now.
Fix or just put that new sbc 427 in....will have to discus with the kid today.
Iam thinking stay with the engine thats in there...
He is sick....
I say, hey we can get it up and running in about two weeks. If ya want to run it at drags....
He isn't sure if he wants to do that.

wow. Could you see where a fuel line may have ruptured or something, or do you think it started as an electrical fire?

Don't know yet.
Iam thinking it wasn't a fuel or gas fire, Iam sure we would have lost the car if it was.
Fuel lines are all steel braided lines and hard lines. they appear to be fine.

weird, looks like it started around distributor., thats were the most damage was. maybe coil wire????

Was there any damage to the exterior paint? That was one of the cleanest looking engine bays I had ever seen in a thirdgen.

Nope no damage to paint except the hood.
But it was the old stock hood.
We didn't put on the brand new, fiberglass ram air hood on yet.
Thank go for that.
That would have been extra bad, by about $600 or so.

If I can find a speed density harness I think I could have it running in a few days. It wouldn't be pretty but it would get him to High School drags.

Heck Iam not even sure he wants to do that now, with everything looking so nasty.

Just don't pop the hood, go run it, and enjoy the car. That is what it is all about.

Jeesh! You have had a real string of trouble with your cars! Glad it wasn't a total loss and it seems you still have a positive attitude.

The fire could be from the braided fuel lines in an indirect way. Those lines will cut through anything they contact. If there was a harness touching them it could be that the harness was cut by the fuel lines and shorted out to ground causing the fire. Another possible byproduct of that situation is arcing to the fuel line which causes a small fuel leak that fuels the fire. Liquid gas won't burn from an electrical spark but the vapor will. This same exact thing caused a fire on my '94 Vette. The fuel lines were rerouted and encased to avoid any future problems.

No just the min on insurance, shoot they still haven’t paid us on the hit and run..

I will need another new distributor, maybe a harness, plug wires,
Map sensor, oh ya, brake fluid reservoir.

I will be looking at those fuel lines today


crap, thats still maybe $400.00 bucks..

Looks like holley commander 950 for tpi is right at 1,000 bucks.

if there is anything you need j/y wise you can't find let me know. we have a few good yards down here i can go through for you. speed density harness, for TPI right ? i MAY be able to do that. there are two TPI cars in the JY right now, both pretty hacked though.

It was running pretty good. Every time We get to the point of say, Dyno, or Drags, somthing happens, Oh, well, at least it didn't happen on the road.

Might pull the motor this sunday, still up in the air. I wonder if the adjustable fuel pressure regulator had anything to do with this..??

As you weigh your options please keep in mind that I still have my older Holley 4Di programmable system with about 200 miles of use that I had on my El Camino. It's been sitting in a box on the shelf for years waiting for a good use. Rated for engines between 350 - 500 Hp. It's a throttle body injection system with a 900 cfm throttle body and four 80 lb/hr injectors and bolts up to any Holley square bore manifold bolt pattern (most performance carbed intakes). It is stand alone with something like a 4-wire hookup. It doesn't have a nitrous switch or compatible with blow through supercharging but it does everything else a person needs to fine tune the car. It also gives the advantage of using a carbed intake manifold which will kick in a lot more HP than a TPI intake manifold.

Anyway, it's probably the least used fuel injection system you'll ever find and because it's an older system the price is better. I'd gladly use it myself but I need more fuel than it can supply.

Well, ya, harness is toast, wow wait till you see the pictures we took.
you will not believe it..

FOUND THE CAUSE::::
Line into fuel rail, the Russell fitting was way loose, sprayed distributor with fine mist, poof!!!!!!! that's what I think, I could turn it by hand.

Motor coming out this weekend if weather permits,
Haven't decided what were going to do.
Powder coating looks pretty good for being in a fire, man that stuff is almost bullet proof.

Still searching for a harness..


two injectors toast as well.



Not to bad of a price for the 950 a lot better than summit.

Hey thanks man.

Ya, maybe bad luck, but could be good luck, No one got hurt, kid is still alive , everyone is happy, we are learning allot, and experiencing allot together.
Other than the shock of the miss haps it is a learning experience,
My kids are way ahead of me when I was there age, and it shows!
Lots to deal with lately as well.

We have many projects going on at the same time, Honda fl250 re-build (off road cart, way cool ) Honda atc 200 3 wheeler rebuild, Honda atc 250se 3 wheeler, big red, another way cool item. And my kid’s car, 2-53 Detroit re-build dozer motor. So the kids get allot of experience.

Its funny my youngest says I have fairy dust, I sprinkle on these things and they work...LOL......Ya right......


To top it all off we have a very close family member that is dying of cancer, we have been spending allot of time over there, he has about two more weeks left, hospice is coming out today.
So this is really hard to deal with.

Not that I want to depress anyone but here is a web site.

Iam the tall guy on the left, the middle one has cancer, the right one is my wife’s dad, and the two kids are Kevin’s, my nephews.

Anyway, thought Ids share something a little personnel with all you guys.
