Ian hooked me up with the stock fuel pump from his T/A. My old pump must have been dying for quite a while 'cause the RS runs stronger than ever now. Perhaps the TPI fuel pump has a higher output than my MPFI pump? At any rate, at least one of my Camaros is mobile again! Thanks Ian! Very Happy

No problem man! Glad to get another thirdgen on the road.

I know they're different part numbers, don't know why though.

Hey, had to stop by your store for some 'fuel injection' hose and saw that you had the day off. I replaced the hard lines with the teflon insert hose so that it will be a much easier swap when I get the Walbro! Cool

The TBI and TPI pumps are different part numbers also, but if you run out of umph with the TBI pump, tpi ones work fine.

I even put a TPI pump in my old vortec 4.3L when the TBI one went out.

Yeah, I replaced the pump myself. I did it using the "cut an access hole above the tank" method. I'll probably catch flak for that, but I had to do it in my driveway in the rain and it had to be done ASAP. I've used that method before and it worked out fine. I'm gonna make a lexan or fiberglass panel and attach it with hinges to make a real access door for the fuel sending unit. You probably won't want to go this route with your Recaro, Don! Wink

That's not a fun job anyway you look at it. It's funny how cold and rain will make us do anything to get the job done! Wink Keep in mind that the metal floor is a fire barrier between you and the gas tank. You might want to weld a plate back in now that it's all done.

Perhaps I'll make my access door out of metal and find some way of making it airtight...

In which case you need to pull the tank and plug the lines and make sure you don't catch the left over fuel on fire or the carpet...

Hell... should have just pulled the tank in the first place Rolling Eyes Wink Very Happy

the "cut a hole in the floor" is seen as "hack job" by most. i agree to a point. if you allready have the tank out i see no issue with cutting an access door for future pump swaps. MANY production cars have fuel pump access doors from the factory, including the Nissan 240SX and BMW E30s (only other cars i have experiance with fule pumps on). in fact, summit sells pre-made doors you can weld, screw, bolt or otherwise put in place. it is a common modification on cars without them i guess.

as far as doing it with the tank in the car... i have cut on a camaro in the past (remember chris's 84 v6?) and know there is about 4" from the floor to the tank. plenty of room. but there is no way i would do it to my car.

while it isnt the preferred method, a proper seal around the access hole will prevent fumes from entering the passenger compartment. There are many production vehicles (none GM that I've seen though) that have access holes from the factory, and you'd never know it.

Wow, its almost like I saw this coming! Laughing I've seen this debate rage on TGO enough times to realize that some (not most) people view this as a "hack job". There are others who say an access hole is the way to go. I feel that the addition of an access hole (once I get it sealed up properly) for future pump replacement is a worthwhile modification. Wink

The people that consider it a hack job are usually the ones that spent several hours removing their fuel tank.

Some previous owner of my car did a stand out job of putting in an access panel for the fuel tank. I believe that a chainsaw was his tool of choice. It looks like absolute shizzle. I took some thick plastic sheets and sealed it of with duct tape and it is fine for the time being. can't see it at least and no fumes are getting in. I'll fix it right someday. A nicely done access door would be a simple project. I know that if I ever have to change the fuel pump on Jen's Firebird it will have a well made access panel.
