Next week, a new woofer I ordered comes in. I'm going to a single 12" vs the 2 10" I currently have. This thing is a monster which was originally designed for SPL (sound pressure level) competitions. Now I can go with a smaller box and possibly hide the amplifier somewhere (spare tire well?), or not and have more room for cargo without folding the seats down.
http://www.memphiscaraudio.com/products/details.asp?cat=&id=38&p=2
It will more than handle the 1100 watts from the sub channel of my amp. When it arrives, I'll drop the car off to get a new enclosure designed and built, hopefully it will have a slot near the front to stand my t-tops in, if not, I'll be looking for another t-top bag. _________________ 92 Camaro

Sweet creamy butter...... that is one hell of a sub. Take care you don't shatter your hatch glass. |

I went down and looked at this ting today. Man, what a monster it is. The whole thing weighs in at 36 pounds!!! The magnet is a little less than half of that at 228oz (14.25lbs). It will be installed in a custom enclosure (probably in the well) with the amp, should free up some space behind the seats. Heres a pic with a tape measure for comparison.

Yowsers!
I can't wait to hear/feel that. Did you have any luck with your box design? I was curious if there would be enough room to have slots to store the tops.

No luck there, woofer is too big. I'll be looking for a t-top bag in the near future. Apparently my car never had one because the hardware for the hooks/straps was never there (picked the hardware up from Magman a while back). _________________ 92 Camaro

My 88 T/A was like that too; did not have the hooks/straps.
I'm sure you will figure out something trick.

Got some progress made, though not alot. Installer kept getting pulled to do some of the smaller jobs, what do you expect from a small shop? Anyway, I took a couple of pics of the progress.
Part of the box with the woofer in place. The amp will go to the right of the woofer (below as you see it.
A little more box. This shows where the required air space will fill the well.
The rest of the stuff. The rack up on the cargo deck will go away. Only the amp will be displayed next to the woofer, the rest of the stuff will be hidden somewhere that isn't used by the woofer's airspace.

Al, is there any benefit to offsetting it like that? Seems like the logical place would be dead-centered. |

| the lower the sound the less your ears can tell where it is coming from. so placement realy does not matter as far as only hearing it from the left goes. |

it don't matter. bass (low freq) saturate the airspace of the car the hatch is awsome on reflecting sound and there the best to put bumps in. unless your suffering from an impulsive mental disorder and everything needs to be perfectly proporsional. _________________

I dunno, that's actually a pretty good possibility.
I didn't know that about the sub placement though. Thanks guys. |

I would have preferred a center position, but in order to free up the space on the rear deck and put everything in the well, this was the only option. Now, since the woofer weighs so much, I think the car will have a serious list to the left I may need a helper spring _________________ 92 Camaro

you could make a ban pass box and use plexi glass and put a rectanglur port in the center of the box. and also the cone would be protected and unseen. and install your amp on the other side covered and it would be steathly. _________________

That was a thought, but a box like that (according to the Memphis site) requires twice the airspace with the slotted port. I intend to have a cover over the whole well, level with the cargo deck - steel grate covered with acoustic carpet, with the appropriate wood framework for support. _________________ 92 Camaro
