Pay up to 2 grand or more to get my 98 fixed...needs new flywheel (possible crank), new clutch, and new cat, and possibly a new starter.

or....

take all the usable parts for my 85 and part out the rest to 4th genners.

or....

sell it whole?

Your input or other ideas are appreciated.

Still up in the air huh? Actually, you are probably better off getting the '98 fixed so that you won't put too many more miles on the '85 although $2000 would buy lots of nice stuff for the Z! Wink

it sure does, but it's 2 grand that i don't want to spend...btw, got the catchcan yesterday...and the 85 is leaking from the windshield and hatch now. I've been reading up on fixing the 98...probably should have the pros do it, but I just dont trust them, especially after what happened with the rear end. 1400 for something that still doesn't sound right and I could have gotten a whole new rear end for just a couple hundred more.

naw, just figure i'm opening up a can of worms...is it cheaper to give a shop a dismantled car that they can shove the new parts in? LOL! That will be the next step before making my final decision on the car.

part the 98.......just like 3rd gens...V6 4th gens are quite plentiful...you can pick up one a few years newer for under 5K.

does yours have a 5 speed? I"ve always wondered what's the spline count on the input shaft? Someone told me the 5 speeds from 4th gens won't work because the input shaft is longer.

Yeah, TJ's 4thgen is a 5 speed. I thought all fbody T5s were the same. Confused

No Ian, we haven't had a chance to get back under the car as last weekend was spent getting the heater working in the '85. Amazingly we ran into no problems, a first for us! And only had to make two trips to Schucks! Very Happy

the 98 has a Tremec T-5, be it is still for a Camaro Razz

anyhow, i think the tranny and motor would have to go as a set...at least that's my guess and RSFreak already has dibs on the motor anyways if i go that route. so far, i haven't received any convincing way to go with this so it's still up in the air... just hate having a nice looking car sitting around collecting dust, but i factory ordered it (i know...should have went balls out and got the SS...lol) Wink

i can't help you with your decision, but i can probably help you with your leaking hatch. where is it leaking exactly? if it's coming in at the soiler mounts (that is where my bird was leaking) you will have a puddle on top of the rear trim where the latch is. pull the spoiler off and reseal those bolts with some silicone. i also may have had a leak where the glass met the rear deck, to fix that you just pull out all the old seal and replace with new silicone.

my opinion on which to keep... i would keep the thidgen. however take the following into account:
roof options, unibody. engines/suspensions/rear-ends/brakes can all be swapped/upgraded, the unibody is hard to fix, and going from one roof to another is difficult. keep whichever you think will be a better base.

i don't plan on getting rid of the 85, that's my "new" daily driver and my project car

well, the 98 is down at the dealer...will know the damages by tuesday...on a good note, my insurance might cover it under flood damage, since it may have been the intake sucking up water from the puddle that started all this crap.
