I see that in bc canada, they require emissions testing on their vehicles. I'm considering moving up there, but not for at least another year, and i would like to take off the smog pump from my v6 camaro. As for other info, i do not have a CAT either. Is there anyway to fool the emissions testing? Thanks. _________________ Towed amaro, 2nd engine blown spent $1500 not spending more. Decided not worth it. |

| I just can't resist. I'm going to ask... Why? What's the problem with having the emissions equipment on your V6? |

How many years do they go back on their testing?

I'm not sure what year, all i read was anytime a new vehicle is registered in bc it has to go through emissions. Yeah, bolt-on a CAT and take it off later maybe thats what i'll end up doing if i can't figure anything else out. But, i would prefer not too, as i did have this pipe welded on, and it was $50. _________________ Towed amaro, 2nd engine blown spent $1500 not spending more. Decided not worth it.

| Well then pull the belt and save it. No weight reduction, but no parasitic loss if that's what you're worried about. Retest is only like $15 anyway, so it's no big loss. |

unless they do a visual inspection the smog pump will not make you fail. it made NO difference in my #s. i tested before and tested after (retests free in oregon) and they were the same.
in oregon they only do a "visual" on your catalitic converter. that is the only piece of equipment they look for. but one thing i must say danked, removing the cat from a V6 car does NO good. these cars do not flow enough to bottleneck at the cat. if you have a Cat made in the last 5 years you are in good shape. even a stock 350 will not outflow a modern cat. that being said, almost anything will flow better then an original or clogged cat. the factory cats on these things are HUGE and more restrictive in design. that is why there was a "dual cats" option for the performance models.
i would cut out your delete pipe, weld in a cat with a flange on both ends. that way if you realy want to you can remove it again and replace it with your delete pipe (with a flange on both ends). this is how my 60* v6 car is set up. now i have never actualy removed the cat, but i could if i wanted too without cutting a damned thing. when i must emission test my GTA again that is what i will do to it as well. that or weld a cat in permanent and get a cutout
anyway, good luck with whatever you decide. |

Originally, i went to my muffler guy, and he said "yeah taking out your CAT will give u more power, less restrictions, make it louder." I mainly did it because i want my car loud. It sounds like a V8 at idle, and when its at say 4k rpms, u can hear me 1/3rd a mile away. I just want too (if needed) pass this test, I do realize my car is a V6, and it is not very strong, so i figure every little bit helps, that is why i do not want the smog pump. I've read a few articles claiming smog delete is between +5 and +8 hp. The junk yard dude gave me the smog delete pulley for nothin, so i figure i might as well use it and possibly increase a few hp in the process. Tony, the CAT that i took off, was the one that was put on the car when they built it. I cleaned it all out when i took it off, thinking maybe one day i will put it back on, but as of right now, i dont see a reason. Thanks for the help, and if i am wrong about the smog pump +hp thing, let me know before i waste my time doing it. _________________ Towed amaro, 2nd engine blown spent $1500 not spending more. Sorry to get off topic, but how did you actually manage to "clean out" a catalytic converter?
In either case, as long as you save parts, it's no big deal, cause you can put them back on in a second. My car passed here before I bought it with no smog system and one really crappy old cat. My Dad's truck will pass without either the pump or the cat (yay loose truck restrictions) but we have to put the pump and belt back on (no tubing) to pass visual. |

In the shed here at my house, my grandpa has built some interesting things... one of which, was a wheel off an old semi-truck or something, i'm not really sure, that had a bar welded to the outside of it, facing straight up. I stuck the CAT on there, stuck another bar through the other end, and pounded all that crap out. The "honey-combs" are still laying there on the ground inside the shed from like 8 months ago. Anyways, i'm not trying to mock you asdfga3, but my original question was, is there any way to fool the test without actually going through all this BS?
~Edit~ And no offense tony, but if i was going to go through the trouble of putting my hollowed out CAT back on, i would just leave it on, so i wouldn't have to screw with it anymore.
EDIT: By the admins. Please do not swear. We let a lot go, please do not use profanity. |

no offense taken. i mostly ment put a REAL cat on, as my GTA will need one to pass emissions, not visualy but it will need the catalytic conversion to pass the sniffer test.
as far as the smog pump HP:
i noticed NO difference. however a 5HP gain might not have been a noticeable difference. i also believe my smog pump was broken, and since it was no longer pumping anything, it was no longer a resistance on the engine, thus any "gain" had allready been made when the thing gave up pumping.
i removed mine for two reasons. the first was that it is heavy, and every little bit of weightr off the nose helps this car handle better. and the second is that it is ugly, and in the way. one of my secondary goals with the v6 car is to get as much usless crap (and even some usefull crap) out of the engine bay as possable. i love an engine bay that is just engine.
i was hoping to see some gains when i pulled it, but they were mostly of the MPG type, not the HP type.
do i think it is worth removing, hell yes. would i do it again, absolutly. |

So now any chance you have of using it temporarily to pass emissions is gone, and you cant run it on the car since it will screw up your flow when your pipe opens and then recloses around the exhaust gas.

Uhh... you do know that being around some of that stuff isn't exactly good for you.

By "BS" I assume you mean 20 minutes reclamping a cat onto the car and reinstalling your smog pump belt? If so, then I kinda doubt it.

Don't put a hollow cat on. It screws up the exhaust. If you need a cat for visual inspection, but you can pass sniff without it, then weld a pipe inside of it. If you can't pass sniff without it, then just do what most people do here and use a part-time cat.
The only way to know what you can get away with is to take the test once, and work from there. |

news flash. the original cat he had did not not work. not a chance in hell. the honeycob he knocked out was probably rattling around in there anyway.

i absolutly agree. i removed a hollowed out stock cat in favour of a newer working cat on my GTA when i first got it. the new cat would flow better then a hollowed out old one. |

I didn't see anything about it being clogged in this thread...
Danked just said his "muffler guy" told him it would be louder without it. |

no he never said it was clogged. he does not have to. a few points:
1. how many original cats have you seen NOT clogged or otherwise screwed up? not many, but a few on nice, well taken care of cars. which dankeds car was not (no offense danked, i am sure alot of that abuse was prior owners. well ok, some of that abuse was prior owners)
2. what ruins catalytic converters? unburnt fuel in the exhaust. the way danked ran his prior engine into the ground i have little doubt it was running rich due to lack of regular maintanence (bad timing + bad 02 sensor = running rich)
3. how many original cats have you seen in good shape? i know technically this is the same point as number one, but it is such a big one i felt it needed saying twice.
so while it was possable danked ruined a perfectly good Cat, the odds are stagaring that he simply cleared out a mostly destroyed cat. while there probably was some honeycomb in it still clinging to its place, most of it ahd probably broken free. |

| True, but it still would have stood a chance of getting him through emissions. |

My car ran like crap, when i got it. I had to spent aprox. $500 just to get it to start. Then i changed the oil, and when i drained it, between 2 and 2 1/2 quarts had drained. I asked the guy when the last time he changed the oil was, and he said he had never changed the oil the entire time he owned it (which was about 2 years). + who knows when it was done before that. Anyways, maybe i can ghetto-rig something. hmm.. shove some of that honey-comb stuff in there, and put a screen so it dont blow out the back...... now i know that attempting to scam the canadian government may not be easy, but it will pay off in the end _________________ Towed amaro, 2nd engine blown spent $1500 not spending more.
