Finished a few mods this week. Earlier in the week Paully welded up a new dynomax x muffler for me. We placed it where the cats used to be and it tucked up pretty good all things considered. It really mellowed the sound out - no popping, no 'raspy-ness' and best of all, no mind-numbing resonance. My next door neighbor came over to express his pleasure with this particular mod hehe.
The muffler is dual 3" in and dual 3" out with an X pipe inside. The inner X pipe is perforated and the casing is packed with fiberglass material.
Then this weekend, Brandon and I put my new Isky beehive springs on. I had correctly diagnosed my limit on the upper end as valve spring related but didn't know the whole extent until we took the valvetrain apart.
See those nicely worn grooves in the valve spring shims? Not good. The old springs were dual spring with a damper inside. It appears that the damper was binding and cutting into the shim. I also found out that when I ordered my heads, AFR did NOT give me the upgraded springs that I paid for. The upgrade was supposed to be 1.530 OD springs but it became real obvious that they weren't when i tried to use my new 1.5 OD shims and they were too big for the pocket . Turns out the springs were the standard AFR195 springs. It's always something lol. Another in a long line of lessons that you can't trust even the best manufacturers. In the process of finding shims that would work we found a cool little auto machine shop/parts store in Oregon City that I didn't know existed.
Here are a pic of the beehives next to the old springs:
The retainers are less than half the size of the old ones. Better spring material + reduced valve train weight = high RPM valve control goodness . She revs nice and smooth. Power comes on steady and linear all the way to about 6500 RPM. I ran it to 6700 once but not too much reason to go beyond that. No more 'wall' at about 5500 RPM. I'm a happy camper.
This morning I finally drilled out a new hole for my hood hinge and got that bolted in tight. I should have done that a long time ago but it is done now. Hood struts lift it right up and the hood/fender/headlights are all nicely aligned again.
Had a chance to see Chris (Quasi-Traction) briefly Friday when he dropped off Rodney's pedal assembly. Brandon, Paul, John and I went and had some beers Friday night. Kelly (90RSrocks - awesome minivan burnout dude) came over for a few minutes Saturday. All in all a good weekend and got to visit with a lot of crewbies.
I love this country . Next weekend I look forward to falling in love with Canadia all over again
Cheers,

These are from Isky. They are apparently using the manufacterer that Comp originally used. Apparently comp has switched suppliers. Don't know any of the back story but I was working with Mike Lewis and he thought that these would be a good match.

Awesome!
How'd you get the new spring stuff to fit in the pocket if it was too big?
I gotta go under the car sometime this week and give some bolts a security snug down. Replace plugs, wash/wax/vacuum and should be ready to go. |

Did you change to 4.10's paul? (since you had to replace the pinion gear anyways) _________________

The beehives were about the same O.D. at the base as the original springs. I had actually looked for ones that were bigger but couldn't find any fortunately. I started grinding down one of the shims then looked at the 15 next to me and started the search for one's that fit hehe. Got them at the machine shop in Oregon City.
Basically a day chasing parts and tools for a couple of hours work.

Glad it work out though!
No Chris I stuck with 3.73 to increase the resale value of the rear when I sell it. |

he'll probably sell it to me, for my berlinetta...
I thought I remembered Brandon mentioned something about the actual thickness of the ring gear being smaller the higher numerically it is. If that's true:
He probably doesn't want to risk damage to the teeth of the pinion or ring gear if he decides to break another ax...I mean use the drag radials again... _________________

More people want to buy a 3.73 than a 4.10. |

With a T-56 I'd think 4.10's would run pretty well, but whatever. Why are you selling it now? (And how much? ) |
