|
|
well, today was day one of the three days Chris, Paul, and I have to swap the BorgWarner T-5 in in place of my TH700R4.
we started working at around 10am this morning and retired around 6:30. so far ALL of the old stuff is out. the new
pedals are in and the "U" bolt holes are drilled, the drill died before we could get the clutch hydrolics in. the hole for the
shifter has been hacked into place (grinder). the spanking new Centerforce Dual Friction clutch is in along with a new pilot
bushing (amusing story number one*). the bellhousing is mounted in place.
we still need to cut clutch hydrolics hole in firewall, install throwout bearing, mount trannismission, install shifter,
install starter (had to get a new one, 700r4 has different starter), wire up clutch starter interupt switch, wire up
reverse lights, install new Energy suspension poly mount and xmember, and then just put everything else back in
(steering colum, seat, center console... etc..)
*funny story number one:
we buy pilot bushing and clutch and stuff and leave baxtars. we get home, and discover they have given us the pilot
bushing for a 2.8 application. it lists a few 6 and 4 cyl applications on the back, no v8s. paul also holds it up
to the hole, it is WAY too small. so we go back to baxters.
we go in and paul begins speaking to the guy who helped us before. paul informs him that it's the wrong one and
he gets rather insistant that it is the correct one, despite not being listed for it on the package. at one point paul
flat out says " dude, it is too small, it will fall out" and he goes over to the computer, looks it up again and says
"thats the right one for a roller 350" to which paul responds "it is too small" finally after more of this he gets one out
of a kit and it is HUGE in comparisson. think a quarter compared to a nickle. so we left, feeling amused.
EDIT*
photos.
TurboHydromatic700R4 is out. we allowed the engine to tilt back on his mounts (i have a small distributor cap) and Paul
had the brilliant idea to use about 3.5 feet of socket wrench extenders to reach the upper belhousing bolts, while i
got some of the lowers with a stub wrench and a step wrench. Chris was busy with the tranny cooler lines at this time.
my flexplate. this is odd. it appears as though somone took the flexplate from a different car and attached it too the
center section from one for a roller 350. there are actualy places where you can see through it. it looks like it
would fall to pieces if you tried to start the car.
i don't know how it did not shake inself to pieces. i'll get a better pic tommorow.
my new clutch. it's orange. it came with stickers. it's awsome.

| Ahh the famous cracked flexplate. They do that once in awhile. When it happens it usually sounds like a rod knock, but only in gear. Good you got that out of there. |

unless for some reason we do not finish in time, i will be taking the GTA to seattle.
brandon... the flexplate made NO noise. i did have a slight intermittent hum from the tranny every once in a while
i supose that could have been the flexplate..... |

What is it with the aftermarket these days.
Brand new Napa starter.... wont turn over. Power all around. Bypass vats, screwdriver method, sparks but no turn.
I got 200miles on my brand new starter on the 6 speed swap, and it did the EXACT same thing. What's the deal these days...? |

napa tests starter, works fine. i show it to sara (the kick ass lady who works there) and she says "what the hell did they order this POS for?" turns out they ordered my the El-cheapo napa one ($10 less, fails 80% of the time). but she sent it back as damaged anyway. i got one for a 94 that is a "gear drive" starter. (what paul said to get in the first place) it is the good kind. they bench tested it and it worked.
the more and more i think about it the more i want to realy clean the hell out of the battery termianals. it is acting like a bad BATT connection. it's de-ja-vu all over again... |

| I'm really not liking the napa starters myself. I've gone through several on both vehicles. All different product lines. The last one I got for the car is the top line they sell, brand new starter, not a reconditioned unit. The dang things goes click click start bout 50% of the time. Some of the cheaper units they forgot to bevel the teeth on the starter drives so they wouldnt even engage the flywheel, had to use my old drive in the new starter. The trucks starter is a couple years old. Works fine most of the time, but every so often it just grunts and stops like the engine is hydrolocked or something. Hit key again starts just fine. And on that rig I have 1 gauge cables and an orbital battery, with a hot start solenoid. So I know its getting good juice. I figure on buying mini's from now on. |

2nd starter was bad.
$169 at baxter for a Powermaster ministarter and all is well.
Oh yeah... and Tony forgot to plug the two VATS wires back in at the column.

you can burn up a starter real easy if you didn't adjust your timing. _________________

Distributor wasn't moved at all..so I don't really see how timing would be an issue........... didn't seem to have any problems when I rode in it today with the T-5 all swapped in. _________________

Congrats Tony on the single greatest mod out there.
If timing ruins the starter, you needed a better starter. |

uhhh.... crap. so i have started the car probably 10 times now. i went to start it just to hear the ministarter again
before i turned in for the night and the celinoid clicks... but no start... i am going to have to check the
terminals and make sure they are still connected tight (could have rattled loose). unfortunatly this will have to
wait. i am leaving at 6am-ish tomorow morning to go rafting in la-pine. will be back late, then leaving early sat
to go to the gathering. monday will be as soon as i can work on it.
double crap. whenever i downshift into third it grinds. no matter what. only third, only when downshifting. i can make the
2-3 shift just fine. i think the synchro is gone. if i RPM match i can get it into third without grinding. |

I couldn't remember........did that starter get shimmed properly when you put it in, or did it just get put in and went?
hmm...that doesn't sound like it'd be the issue anyways....likely a bad connection or the solenoid is no good on that one....
The T-5 in my 2001 likes to lock out or grind between 2-3 shifting up if you're really on it (like 5k+ shifts), no problems shifting down.....your probably right though, syncronizer problem. Have you had any problems with upper RPM up-shifts? _________________

| Ran it with no shim, and it sounded fine other than once in a while it would give a little chirp as the engine fires and let off the key. Not sure which way it needs to go, but told Tony how to try both ways and see if it gets better/worse. |

well, i crawled under the car tonight. contacts were a little loose on, tightened them up for good measure. then went to start it. no dice. so i got the volt ohm meter out and tested the power at the battery in. 12.xxVDC. tested the power on the other big fat post (from celinoid to starter) 0.00VDC, then had a helper turn the key to start and tested that connection again, .03VDC. i think the celinoid is shot. i will be removing the ministarter and returning it to my local Baxtars. unfortunatly this must wait until after the gathering. so i will be driving up there in the six.
sooo..... WHY THE HELL DON'T PEOPLE BUILD THINGS RIGHT ANYMORE!!!! hopefully the new one will work. |
