1988 Pontiac GTA

PostPosted: Fri Jun 23, 2006 8:45 pm    Post subject: what i did today Reply with quote

well, i'll start with what i did on the GTA because it is the most cool looking.

THIS is my old steering wheel. it has been on the car since i got it. i hated it at first but then liked how thick it was.
the stock wheel in my firebird has a bigger curcumfrence, but has less thickness. that was the only thing i liked
about it. i think it is ugly, and the fact that a garret wheel has a momo center cap is odd...

THIS is my new steering wheel. it is a stock wheel. it is the same curcumfrence as the one in my firebird, and
almost the same girth as the gerret one. it also says GTA and adds a little class to the interior.

on the 1986 firebird i swapped in some Camaro tan seats to replace my torn and worn out (uncomfortable as hell)
"delux" firebird seats. here is a shot of the old driver seat and doorpannal. see how the grey on the seat matches the
grey on the doorpannal... i always loved that. i have only seen ONE other firebird in person with that color combo, and
one on TGO.

and here is a shot of the "new" tan passanger seat. my only regret is that i no longer have a split rear bench..
se la ve..
you will notice the tan does not jive with the grey on the doorpannal.. my goal is to get some tan doorpannals
from the J/Y and strip some of the fabrick off, then replace the grey with tan. i think that would almost fool people
into thinking it was factory that way. it would help blend it all together.

i also fixed all of my seatbelt buckles. i purchased the "recall kit" from GM about a year ago. it was 5$. this included
new buttons to replace the worn cracked buttons and new springs. now, for the record this recall should have
been done at no charge, as my VIN number falls right in the middle of the "eligable" list, but G "we are natzis" M
says my car does not qualify, i went to war (spent a few hours on the phone with different dept. in corprate) and
lost Sad but i still needed the stuff fixed, so i went to "Bruce cheverolet" in hillsboro and they were nice enough to
lend me the tool to fix it. it is a specialty GM tool. after using the stupid thing i realised all you need to do is pry
the button out with a screwdriver Rolling Eyes. no pictures of that, but all my bucklers now function as if they were new again.

and the last and final thing i did on my car today was to replace my Tan carpeted rear locking hatch area cover
(turns the well into a proper trunk, sort of) with a black carpeted one from chris's berlinetta. looks great with
color matched carpet finaly.
i have a before shot, see that tan bit in the back? yeah, it's black now.

all in all it was a verry productive day for me.

I'll admit I haven't logged a whole lot of time with those smaller racing-style wheels, however the two times I've driven a car with them, I didn't like it. To small for me. I like my stock leather-wrapped IROC wheel. Very Happy

I'm going to have to do something about mine before long. The stock foam at the top has separated from the core underneath and it "twists" as I grab hold of it. No chunks have come out of it yet, so I'm still good on appearances.

schultzy-
thanks. i like it alot.

asdfga3-
i agree, makes the wheel to hard to turn, one nice feature was that i could drive while handcuffed Razz

Alhasse- dude, that sucks. my sisters old pontiac grandam did that... that thing was a piece of shizzle. i have a "garret" racing wheel i can sell you Very Happy

so i forgot to mention, my steering wheel puller would not fit inside the wheel (threads were to small), so i put the wheel
back on its lock plate (thing that is pressed on) and pulled real hard a couple of times, utilizing my awsome arm strength (ask
rodney, i nearly crippled him while arm wrestling* Shocked ), until it came off. i was sure to get a good "grrrunnnnt" in there...

badass +1! Laughing

Sweet work tony, I'm glad I wasn't the only one outside working on their third-gen. Too bad you had to replace the black and grey seats with tan ones, I really liked how it looked. But whats the point of looks when you can't stand to sit in the thing.

I can't believe how manley you are, that is so hardcore:roll: Razz

much better looking Thumbs up

I still think you should get a third gen console for the Megashifter...it'll give the GTA a good "stock" look on the inside.

I have the upper portion with the clock that you could get rid of if you want a cup holder still........you can always sell the whole console with the megashifter when you go to get rid of the Auto.

I'm seriously trying to get rid of it.....its just collecting dust.

they're not that much different. They bolt in to the floor in the same spots, they have the vents for the Heat/AC in the same place. you would have to cut down the portion right above the ash tray in the camaro, because the firebirds have a seperate "pod" for the climate control and radio, whereas in camaros its integrated into the console.

Why the 3rd gen console with the manual trans swap? Just going to make the interior look "bone stock" once you finish all the powertrain mods to the car?

He'd have to buy a new console when doing the swap anyway, wouldn't he?

yes, but tony and I were discussing why he should put a 3rd gen console in his GTA now (so it at least makes the interior look closer to "stock"). My argument is that I'd put the 3rd gen console in now with the megashifter and auto, and when he puts a 6 speed in, use the 4th gen console. He can always sell the whole console when he swaps, with the megashifter attached.

I'd say leave what you have now, then sell it when you do the swap. Every time you buy and sell stuff, it's just more of a pain, and more shipping charges. Rolling Eyes

exactly. also, right now it all works. i donot plan on taking any of that console apart until i remove the megashifter... it is a PITA to work with on the 4th gen consoles.

when i do my 5/6 speed swap i will run a 4th genfor a while. i i don't like how it looks i will swith to a thirdgen one. i will probably stick with the 4th gen one though

Thanks, but I need to stick with stock for now, this is one of those with the air bag in the middle.

i don't know for sue. trying to decide if i should do it late summer or wait until the 700 blows up.

ALHASSE !!! dude i ahave a spare airbag wheel!!! it's for sale? you want it? there is no airbag or anything, but if you read up on how (with your electrical skillz it should not be to hard) you can swap over the airbag module without discharging it. wheel is in good shape.

I'd say replace it anyway if you want to retain it. That airbag is right at the 10-12 year replacement.

Let me think about that. I need to pull the bag to remove the wheel anyway, right? I'll have to figure that out first.
