Ahh... I see the problem. I assumed that the oil was run through side tanks on the rad line a tranny cooler, not running coolant through the oil pump.

Edit: Tony, there was a lot of stuff done to the car by previous owners. Most of it was done pretty well. I think they were planning on a dedicated drag car, seeing as it has a 3.73 BW swapped in, and a built TH700-R4.

should i pull the "cooler" off my engine? i don't like the idea of my oil being restricted. Shocked

plus then i could run the bigger filter and not worry about clearence around my headers. or is that just a problem with V6s with headers?

If you arent changing motors or something, I wouldnt remove the oil cooler just cause. The only reason we didnt put Mike's back on was because it was clear full of metal debris from when the L98 gave up. There's no way to completely clean that stuff out, so if we'd used it some of the metal would have ended up in the new engine. The cost of a new oil cooler wasnt worth the benefit.

How does a cooler restrict filter size anyway? It's hard to tell without mine being all there, but it looks like the pipes would come off the front side, and swing out of the way.

The cooler adds a few inches to the length. It can make the filter hang lower then the oil pan sump.

Is the sump going to be at the very bottom of the pan? Right now the filter I have on it is equal to the bottom of the oil pan.

I'd rather hit a bump and dent my pan, than rip my filter off so my engine runs out of oil!

Yeah, anything tall enough to take out that filter would also take out the Y-pipe and probably a good chunk of the oil pan. However I'm still worried about it being lower than the sump, which I didn't even think of when I installed it.

My pipe doesn't hang down much lower than my oil pan. And my oil pan is dented.

I've been running the long 2 quart filter for several years now and have hit my y-pipe several times but no dents on the filter at all.

I'd also suggest that anyone changing the oil on our type of cars with a vertically mounted filter pre-fill the filter completely with new oil. Especially if running the 2 quart unit like I am. 2 quarts is a lot of oil to pump before the engine gets any oil after a filter change.

Good advice. On my second oil change ever (when I worked at a local repair station) one of the other techs told me that, been doing it ever since.

The Y-pipe on my car is a wierd little fab-job. Coming off the drivers side header it's actually about an inch lower than the crossmember. Then it swings up and joins with the passenger side header.

On my stroker, I have a high pressure, high volume oil pump. It's typically pegged ALL the time.

Have you changed the sending unit? I personally, wouldn't worry about it. But then, I didn't think gold was going back up to 700 an ounce, either.

Nah, I'm not gonna bother with it. I know those guages are typically crap, but as long as it's not overly high or low, screw it. Cold oil level is dead on with the larger filter, so I'm happy with it till something else breaks.

Now I need to find out what's sucking down all the gas. Mileage is actually still dropping, down to around 10 mpg.

lol.... Google "oil filter study" and you'll end up with several hundred of those. That's the most refferenced/mirrored one though.
