my freind dustin finally came and looked at my 2.8 (well actualy his ex-girlfriend and her uncle came and looked at the car) today and a deal was made. $1000. yay (i get my money/he gets the tittle on tuesday). that covers my exhaust system expenses on the GTA and leaves me with enough dough to purchase SFCs. but not enough to have em put on
so what kind should i get? the way i see it there are three main types.
1. convertable type. the ones that go along the trannytunnel. i have been advised to leave these to verts.
2. the squarestock type. do them yourself, require floor cutting. cheaper.
3. the pre-made to fit "bolt on" style. go in without rquiring mods to the car. (other then the wealding) more expensive. powdercoated (spiffy colors) usualy. better?
i am basically looking for crewbie input on this. TGO has waring factions fighting to the death on the issue and never realy getting anywhere. what type should i go with? thanks guys. _________________ 86' firebird (Junked in 2015). 88' GTA (sold in 2020).

For the buy-it-yourself kind of thing there are two main types, the perimeter style that go along the pinch weld and the interior style that only attach directly to the frame rails.
I've got a set of MAC/Alston ones that weld to the frame rails. Still need to put them on though. 2 years and counting. Only went with those because they were the only style for my car. _________________

I've got "MOO" sfcs.
Uh... the square stock ones are bolt and weld. They don't require any floor modifications.
Brandon fabbed up mine, and we put bracing to the frame rails. I even added more. Stiff as can be. Jack up one corner, and you get 3 tires off the ground. Cheap too.
I wouldn't go with "bolt in" because they don't stiffen things up enough. If you get the round ones, sometimes you need to use spacers welded to the floorpan aswell to get the attachment.
Keep in mind, with powder coating, you hit bumps it will rub off. You have to grind places from the get go to weld it.
Rustolium worked great on mine, and still looks great. Just wipe it clean if you wanna be like Mike! |

| ive got the spohn ones. they are great. weld right in, and have great ground clearance. just got to find someone w/ a drive on lift (like all the others) and have them welded. seems alot of guys on tgo are running them. they sure stiffened up the body on my car, now i just need to fix the sagging doors and i should be set (also got wonderbar and STB). |

| You don't have to have a drive on lift. Ramps in the front, and jack stands on the rear in the back work fine. |

when i said "bolt on" i was just describing the spohn "pre-fit" kind. because you can bolt them on. if i got those i would weald them for sure.
so it sounds like self made square stock ones are the way to go eh? cheap and effective. i do not have the expertiese to do that myself (do i?). where should i take it to have it done? |

Home made out of 2" square is a great way to go. If you have to pay someone to make a set from scratch and weld them in it may be cheaper to buy a set and have them welded in.
This is what I did on the drivers side ( easy side)
The passanger side is alittle more challanging depending on your exhaust. I decided to completely build it around my exhaust because I was already happy with the way it sat up nice and tight.

the spohns are not "Bolt In," meaning you cant bolt them in, drive to the welder and have him weld it in. the will bolt into the back SF but the tubes have no provisions for bolts at the front of the car. so, you MUST have the spohn ones welded in. thats all.[/list] |

| your right. someone makes a set you can "bolt in" and then drive to the welding shop, i guess it's not spohn. |

Looks like i've taken my finished pics off the web. But they're pretty easy to build and fit pretty tight. |
