who wants the posi out of my 10 bolt. it's good. make me an offer.
one axle also for sale.

UPDATE! the good axle is now out if anyone wants it i will let it go for cheap. the posi is almost out... can't quite figure out what holds it in... post in garage about it.

What's the gear ratio? disk or drum brakes? Or are you just selling the posi unit alone?

well, i meant just the posi unit... but if you want the whole rear i'll sell it. one of the axles is bent though Sad

but they are easy enough to change, and should be prevalent in junkyards. rear end is 2.73 DRUM rear. drums are in good shape however... almost never used. my car had a disc prop valve, so they never realy did anything. they were just there for looks Rolling Eyes

i figured most rears will have a better gear ratio, so most people would just want the posi-goodness.

i also have a set of 9 bolt disc backing plates you could re-drill for a 10 bolt (if you swap sides the bolt patterns will never even be close to each other, so you will not have holes right on top of each other) they are for 82-88 style discs.

if you are looking to go 89-92 style discs GM still sells the 10 bolt backing plates. there like $15 each. thats a steal.

i was planning on removing the posi unit tonight... i'll hold off for a bit till i know if you want the whole thing.

Realistically, I'd take the whole axle and setup, as mine is a Right Tire Fire 2.73...and doing the whole axle seems like it'd be easier than putting in a posi unit.

you could have my old rear end if you wanted if that would knock the price down at all....

would you take $130 for the whole axle?

sure. keep in mind the right axel is bent, but i will help you swap one of your good axles into it if ya want. or we can get one out of a junkyard and swap that one in. that way when it gets time to actualy swap the axles you only need to do the swap and bleed the brakes.

rear has the steel drums, not aluminum BTW. also, if need be i can deliver the axel to you, i dont remember seeing any truck or anything at your place. i can use my dads suburban.

EDIT* also i have no need for another rear end. this is the one i pulled off of my GTA this last weekend. it's an extra.

re-EDIT* this is not for your fourth gen is it? if you put a thirdgen rear in a fourthgen (totaly possable) it will move your rear tires in a bit. you will probably want to get wheel spacers. also if that is the case i don't think your axles would swap into the posi rear, we would need to hit the yards.. all things considered it would be better to swap the posi unit over, if this is for your fourth gen.

Do you think it'd be easier to do the posi unit or the whole axle (mostly I'm thinking of where I'd put the old axle once it was off [severe lack of garage space]).....you're the experienced one of the two of us. The only rear end work I've done was swap carriers (3.00 to a 3.55) off a 9" ford rear, and that wasn't too difficult. Probably would be a good idea to get a third set of hands involved though.

I have a 1972 C-10 right now, just being borrowed (potentially purchased later) hauling the axle isn't really a problem for me (except having a TH350 and a 3.73 rear end makes gas mileage intresting from here to hillsborro)

Wanted to ask you something else, but I"ll take care of that in a PM.

Intresting thing though......there seems to be some sort of vaccum leak I haven't squared down yet. although the thing idles in D at about 800rpm (rather rough) and in N or P its at about 1000.

well, with two people, not including bleeding the brakes, a rear end swap is an hour project (two if somthing screwed up happens). but we also need to pull the diff cover and swap an axle, so that will add some time, and i think 10 bolts are c-clip retained ( mike or brandon will know for sure, i'll also run a search on TGO)

i have never removed inthernals before, i would not even know where to begin, i think you nead to have a professional re-seat your ring gear or somthing.... Confused

When you pull the cover off and look at the carrier you will find a little 5/16 head bolt that keeps the pin between the axles in. You might want to find a 6 point 5/16ths box end wrench so you don't round that little bastard off as it is pretty tight. Best way is to use a small hammer and hit the wrench in the right direction. After that is out you have to work that pin out. Some are easy to get out and some you have to tap it down a little and then roll the carrier around and pull it out. Don't push it down in the rear end too far because then you won't be able to rotate the carrier and get the pin out. ( I did that once Embarassed

).Once that is out push in the axle you are removing and grab the C clip with a magnet or needle nose pliers. Then the axle will slide right out. Prolly be a good time to replace the seal on that side while the axle is out. Maybe the bearing too since the old axle was bent. For the bearing you might have to rent a slide hammer.
