Ive been thinking lately about buying a new muffler for my car but im not sure what to go with. My magnaflow just isn't quit deep enough and nowhere near loud enough. I dont want to be too loud but loud enough to be noticed and not get nagged on by the poh poh's. I was thinking maybe ravin? Anyone have any experience with them or know a good muffler that isn't too expensive? Thanks in advance _________________ Project_1986_TA

I really like my hooker aerochamber. Really deep toned. Without overdrive it kinda drones on the freeway(turning 3500 or so). If you do decide to go with a hooker get the early kit. It's like $200 much cheaper then the later ones. Only difference is the way the Ipipe connects to the cat. I just cut that off, course I dont have a cat either. BTW no cat will make it much louder too. |

On a 305 TPI a magnaflow w/o cat, is not as loud as a flowmaster w/ a cat. As tested on my friends and I's cars.
My flowmaster had a better rumble at idle, and louder at WOT.
When my friend added headers and a cat, it really got quiet, better than stock... but I'd take a summit muffler over magnaflow.
Brandon's sounds nasty, but I like the flowmaster sound as well. |

me too, and you can tune the sound to your liking with the cutout feature built in. the part i don't like is the price tag. |

right now im only looking to buy a muffler that isn't too expensive, no more than $120. In the near future, in a few months i hope to get some headers. Would removing the cat. make it louder over a high flow cat.? _________________ Project_1986_TA

Kyle, all you need is this:
Quote: | Extra Strength Muffler Bearing-
Do you have an annoying rattling in your mufflers? Are they sagging a little? Don't quite sound right? That could be the symptoms of a worn muffler bearing. Allow me to introduce the KaleCo muffler bearing! It's unique iron-graphite composite with pre-grease-packed assembly provides over 200,000 miles of smooth muffler operation! It is most likely they will outlast your mufflers. Also works well on heavy duty exhaust systems. One per muffler. |
That should keep everything working good for quite some time!

I've only heard Magnaflow pre and post cat, and the cat does make a huge difference, headers in my experiance wont make you louder than manifolds, but sometimes deeper.
No cat/headers/flow master that's what I'm doin. |

I have grown to love the way my flowmaster sounds with a gutted cat. Mine has a pretty deep tone with a strange resonator sound at part throttle and just plain loud at full throttle.
Brandons sounds good to though. |

If you're doing a stock style exhaust then Aerochamber is the definite winner.
Magnaflow shines in other areas |

Bart, how much do those headers run? Are those something u could use on a highly modified engine? cuz i have lots of plans for my car and dont want to have to get another set. I was thinking about going with the Edelbrock ones in the summitracing magazine for $325 with the Y-pipe and all the goodies to install. Im thinking i might just give ravin a try, the guy at midas says that no muffler has proven to flow better than them plus he says it made his 2001 V6 camaro sound like it had some balls too it and needed an extra resonator to quiet it down. |

I wouldn't take my car to any midas dude. They told us our Grand Am needed all new rotor's, drums, shoes, pads etc... Took it to an independant shop, all we needed was new pads up front and rotor's machined. Not saying the guy you talked to wasn't honest, but for future references, I would personally stay away from them....
I got my Hedman header's for something like $120 or so from Summit, and the Y-pipe was $99 IIRC. But that was with out emissions. Don't think the emissions set is too much more. |
