I know this info exists on thirdgen.org, but I wanted the opinion of the cascade crew, as I think you guys can give me a better answer minus the ego and smartass crap I would get on thirdgen.
SOOOO.....I want to know the possibilities, pros, cons, or if it is even feasable to run non AIR headers on a LO3 tbi. Maybe some of you already are? Just plug the holes and....?
Any info/experiences/2 cents...needed and welcome.

I have non AIR headers on a TPI. The pump is still there and hooked up, but instead of pumping into the headers or maniffolds only the one line to the cat is actually still sorta functionable. _________________ '88 Formula

| Yes you can delete them. It's a little harder on the cat...if you still have one. Since the air injection system only works when the car is cold and the ecm is in open loop there's no tuning issues either. |

air lines to the exhaust manifold vs without . kinda goes two ways. depends on if its your daily driver or a summer car and if you have emission testing in your area. the air entering your manifold helps out on burning the excess gases and helps out your cat causing to heat up faster (during the winter) with out the air to the cat causes a premature "plug up" mine only lasted a couple of years after removing my pump. so if you what a cleaner environment get it or build up a summer car and rip it out. I have no A.I.R. injection on my headers and i later hollowed out my cat when i removed my air pump long ago. i have no emissions in my area. so its good if you have a complete system. _________________

| unless the v6 and v8 AIR systems are different compuerwise they DO in fact run after engine warms up. as i ahve been told before anyway. i will see if i can find the post i am talking about. |

I was talking about the cat it dosen't work properly until it is fully warmed up. the air pump heats it up faster during a cold start and continually work. A mechanic told me you could have a car burn oil but you wouldn't see smoke as much or not at all if the car has a excellent smog equipment . _________________

| The manifold air injection lines can't work any time the vehicle is in closed loop. You'd be pumping fresh air into the exhaust ahead of the O2 sensor. Now the line to the cat may be used, i'm not sure bout that. But as I said it will be harder on the cat without either of them. The extra air in the exhaust is supposed to burn up excess hydrocarbons. If you don't have the air lines then the catalytic convertor tries to burn all of the hydrocarbons itself. |

so the air system does actualy have a benifit.... so have they had air injection as long as there have been catalitic converters?
and just for clairification they stop functioning once the car has warmed up? |

The AIR tubes that inject air into the manifold STOP working when the car is warmed up. The Air Pump pumps air full time (as far as I know) to the cat. |

i believe that is only true on v8 models. the 2.8/3.1 air systems do not do anything after the car warms up.  |

| I think what Paul means is that as long as the pulley is turning the pump is pumping air. If its not going into the exhaust the valving exhausts it to atmosphere. So the pump is always a constant drag. The valves are what turn the air on/off to each component. |
