That sounds cool, was the motor from a TransAm or some big oldsmobile? Was it quick?

Not sure what it came from, but was the same as what was in a lot of the Trans Ams, some motor homes, etc. Wasn't near as quick as I would have liked for the size motor (was stock and only had 180 HP from factory), still had the V6 trans and rear end. I think my Camaro 305 would have outdone the 403 as far as quickness...

Now put a motorhome behind both the 403 and the 305 and race them again! Wink

The 403 was a stump puller. With the right gearing and driver it is a good motor, but if you apply traditional muscle car logic to it (low gearing, light weight, high rpm) it's a dog.

Which is odd because the 403 is a giant bore short stroke motor. 4.351" bore.. largest ever in a sb v/8 with a 3.385 stroke.

Sounds good for a revver.. except the olds oiling system isnt up to the task. Only good for 5k rpm. Also the 403 had window'd mains so the crank had a habit of breaking right off the bottom of the block. It's rumored that some motor homes got non window'd mains, but nobody's ever proved it with a picture.

That said dad's 79 TA seemed to move quite well with one.

So if you had a TransAm with a 403, do they do better with some super tall gears or something?

Alot of them were delivered with rear end ratio's in the 2.4x range. 2.73 and 3.23 would have been performance ratio's.
