Well,

The Audi went back together again this weekend. (try #5).

On startup, things looked good, after abotu 5minutes it started to smoke. We assumed that this was coolant burning off that had leaked into the exaust from taking the head off. So we descided to drive it from my house, up to Sandy and back. It smoked the whole way up there, but no major coolant loss. On the way home, the smoke started to stop. Got home, checked coolant again, we had to add a hair, but not much. Drove back up to Sandy again. Very little smoke this time. Thumbs up. Drove it up to Sandy and back one more time. No smoke at all, car was running great (good enough I actualy called Schultzy to share my excitement). Descided I may have actualy fixed it, so I parked her, and headed inside to relax and relish in my victory over zzeeee Germans.

I went out about an hour later, to start it back up, and check the coolant level. I started it up, and immediatly tons of white smoke again. Thumbs down. I ran it in my driveway for about 20 minutes, the smoke never stopped. Shut her off again, and went inside to think about how that was happening. 1.5hours later, I had to go run some arrends, descided to try the Audi, and maybe take it. Started it up, no smoke Thumbs up, drove off, about .5mile down the road, white smoke starts billowing out again. Thumbs down

Anyway, I am at a loss, I figured the smoke we initialy had was just coolant in the exaust, and when it stopped, it had burnt it all off. That doesn't explain why it started smoking again. On the other hand, if the gasket was still leaking, why isn't it smoking on start-up, and why did the smoke stop.

Anyway, the frustration mounts, I am out of ideas. If anyone wants a Quattro for cheap, now is your chance. Wink Added bonus, you will never get a photo radar ticket, as this car is equiped the the ultra rare smoke screen option.

Brandon...Hit me up on IM tonight, I have some questions.

Man that sucks. I hate the feeling that you think you accomplished something great by finishing a big project on my car and then it just breaks again or doesn't work at all. Sad

That's why I'm really apprehensive about doing anything more to mine. But then again it's still dog slow, crappy through the corners and generally a typical thirdgen. LMAO

So how much is cheap? Razz

So what are down payments these days? Like $50? Laughing

If you get yourself into a car payment are you going to have money to dump into both that and the maro? (and want to?)

Have any ideas what it might be?

And is the coolant getting lower?

Did you do anything to the block deck? I'm sure the head surface is flat, but if the block surface has a warp to it, it will nullify any benefit of having a new/machined head and gasket.

Also, the head may have a hairline crack at the valve seat which will expand/contract with however hot the engine is, and allow more/less coolant bypass, causing the smoke.

I don't think it takes too much coolant in the exhaust to make it billow smoke like that, and the level won't go down very much even though it looks like you are laying down a smoke screen that would make the guys in Fallujah proud!!

Good luck!
P.

The head was pressure tested by the machine shop.

I didn't do anything to the block deck, but we did check it with a straight edge and feelers, max variance was .0015

Auto Zone has a cooling system pressure tester on their loan-a-tool program. I think it's like $100 deposit, but you get it all back. Might give that a try.

Ok, well per brandon I am trying some stuff called 'waterglass' to see if that will make it seal. I guess it actualy works iteslf into cracks, etc. and then turns to glass, sealing it out. I have to run the car for 30 mins at idle, then drain the coolant system and let it sit overnight and cure. So I cam inside while its out there idling, smoking like crazy and pissing of the people next door. Very Happy

everyone cross your fingers.

Good luck John, I ran a can of block sealer through the 89 once. Cured the water in the oil problem right off... So is this the last DIY attempt at fixing it, or are there other options?

Well, After letting the car sit its 24hours for the waterglass to cure, I took it for test run, went 30 minutes without any smoke!

Gotta finish putting the front of the car completely together today, and wash her (I can hardly see out the windsheild). Another shake down run today, and hopefully we will be good to go.

Being that I basicly used a major band-aid to fix it, I may need to start looking for a used scubie WRX to replace this thing, before it dies perminatnly.

Or, I need to find a used turbo motor for this.
