After years of complaining that my 7.3L Superduty is too loud and rides too harsh, I finally got the courage to pony up and get something that is really right for me. I ordered a F150 with the EcoBoost today. I finally got something that is quiet and refined. It will arrive in about 2 months. Now I need to work on selling the Superduty and Cherokee.

I got all kinds of cool old-guy features like Sync, rear camera, tailgate step, adjustable pedals, power rear window, big trailer mirrors, and other doodads most of you will think are useless. I'll never make the mistake of having a 2WD truck again and this time I made double sure of traction by getting 4WD and the electronic axle locker. Very Happy

Jon, how many miles on your 7.3?

I'm not interested in buying it, but I'm going somewhere with that question.

There you go.

Start reading up on misfire issues, frame failures, crappy fuel mileage, torque converter failures, and then remember that in their history Ford has never made a good engine. Never.

You own a trailer, yes?

Good, don't sell it.

You will not be able to rent a flatbed trailer with that truck. GVW is too low.

My point is that I think you're making a bad mistake, man. You're giving up a truck that's got a guaranteed 120K+ left on it for a truck that is poorly engineered and has some very real problems.

I don't mean to dump on you, I know you're stoked about a new toy and some new engineering to play with but I think this will go sideways fast on you, buddy. Google "ecoboost misfire" and start reading. Ford is in Head-in-the-Sand mode about it right now, but it will get worse and they will have to deal with it.

I for one don't think you are making a mistake. A family member of mine has an EcoBoost Taurus SHO and has had it for a few years now. She has had zero problems, and absolutely loves it. I would bet the car has over 40k by now and still runs as good as the day it was new.

I Googled "ecoboost misfire" and found like three people complaining about a stutter at idle or a random bog at 60mph. Any other new vehicle will have just as many issues. A few chuckleheads on a forum does not equal a major problem. 5thgen Camaros when new had more people than that complain that the battery cable caught fire and burned their car to the ground. The good thing about a new vehicle? You have a warranty. If something breaks, fix it for free. If it breaks a lot, lemon law it and buy something else.

Mileage, people seem to be getting teens and twenties depending on driving. Pretty damn good for a fullsize truck. Frame bending, happens to a lot of SVT Raptor guys who overheat their shocks and the frame takes the stress of hitting a big kicker at speed. Much more stress than even dropping a truck freefall from 10 feet in the air. As an engineer, I bet you understand the forces involved pretty well. Razz If you don't try to do prerunner style driving with it I bet you won't see that problem.

I don't know what year your old truck was and what package you're getting on the EcoBoost, but GVWR is roughly similar as well.

99-2003 Superduty 7.3l 2WD
F-250=8800
F-350=9900
F-350 DRW=11000ish

Ecoboost 4WD
non-tow package=8000+
tow package=11000+
Depending on rear gear and truck options

Aaron, some people have reasons to like old vehicles, but you're a little alarmist about new vehicles. They're not all that bad. Wink In fact, as far as new trucks go, the EcoBoost is damn good. I think you're piling it on a little thick here.

You say Ford is bad at making engines, well I propose that they are bad at making V8s. Think about it. Wink 3.0 Vulcan V6, bulletproof. 300 I6, bulletproof. 2.9 V6, gutless but bulletproof.

They've already TSB'ed for the misfire and for the torque converter failures, so I have got to believe that it's more than three people on the internet.

FWIW GM recalled the fifth-gen Camaro's because of those crappy cables. Wink

There's a low percentage of people who have problems with the EcoBoost.
With a new truck, if he has a problem (big if) they will fix it under warranty.
As he said, for his needs it's a better truck than the PowerJoke.

This I can see. With the 4x4 sixer he can sell both his other rigs.

I still think it is a serious downgrade vs. the proven durability of a 4x4 'Stroke, but no one around here listens to my crazy ramblings anyway. Laughing

People do listen and your opinion does matter. The problem is you have such an insatiable appetite to be "right" that you lack discretion to know when sharing your opinion is inappropriate or detrimental.

I really think it's an Opinion, not law. There will always be the diesel vs gas truck blah blah but it's really a purpose and subjective nature to what's desired out of sad rig.

What works for one guy, may not work for the next. Aaron is just overly opinionated :O) It's what happens when you're stuck alone in the mountains drinking tasty NW beer.

Is that telling me to mind my business about truck engines? Laughing

Hey now, the new place is about two miles further away from the mountain! Razz

Landlords want the place back by April 27th. New place has a decently sized two-car but no shop and no covered parking. Cheaper rent and closer to town, so that's okay I guess. Shrug
